"Not necessarily" says maybe we don't know what else the major contributing factor could possibly be? :)
Well depends on what we are talking about. Dogs or humans? Hopefully we haven't resorted in wrangling us in the same group as the dogs. Not necessarily has a broad meaning for sure. No where does it suggest that we don't know what other factors could be.😉

You brought it up. You suggested that it wasn't the Preacher or his wife's fault if their child committed a crime. Is that not your stand now?

"Personal Responsibility" doesn't know the difference. Dogs, humans, sheep, whatever. And that's how we started down this path. :)

I read about half of this thread... enough to see a lot of passion and opinion about the subject. I had a bad incident several years ago which I'm not proud of nor want to disclose all details.

Though I learned that when neighbors have dogs that are left to run the neighborhood (in my case they had 3 and they were more trouble than I even knew) you need to go have a conversation. My wife kept telling me about them and my youngest son was becoming afraid to go outside because they would see him and come over barking usually they stopped short of my property but they were getting braver.

I finally experienced these three dogs myself when my boys and I were outside shooting the pellet gun in the back yard. They did come on my property and they were agressive. Telling my boys to stay behind me and So I delt with it right then.. but dogs did not die.

I did end up in a mediation hearing but they found I was within my rights.. and they told my seathing B neighbor she was lucky I didn't have a shotgun. Indeed she was lucky. She would laught to my wife about her dogs being gone all day and coming home with blood on them. After the incident all my neighbors started telling me about their own encounter with the dogs.. trapping them on their porches etc.

I do like dogs and really hated that situation went were it did but I don't blame the dogs. I blame the neighbors for letting 3 dogs run and myself for not listening to my wife sooner and going and dealing with them.

In short... you gotta talk to your neightbors and try and be civil.

Oh no my stance hasn't changed maybe we're having a comprehension issue. If the son or daughter of a good family commits a crime. It has nothing to do with the the parents so they're not the" major contributing factor" that's called choice/ free will. In dog's pits in particular it's genetic in the bloodline. The best of your average dog owners may do all the right things then for no apparent reason the dog turns. Owners fault? Major contributing factor?

Pretty sure city folks think that a dog riding in the bad is cruelty to animals.

I enjoy hearing about stuff like this but am glad that I live away from people with the kind of thinking that dogs need seatbelts and should not be allowed to ride in the back of trucks. But these idiots woudl probably try to buckle up thier goldfish for the ride home as well so better to just laugh at them if they try to tell you what to do with your animals. Heck they probably think cattle and horses should be buckled up in trailers as well.

OK. I'll stay out of Nebraska.

I worry more about deer coming through the windshield than a dog.
.
This has nothing to do with kids so dont' try to change the subject. If you want to buckle up your dog feel free but understand that there are plenty of us country folks who would get a heck of a laugh watching someone buckle up thier dog in the prius so they can go get a latte. I have never seen it done around here but I suspect the closes people who would buckle up a dog are probably in Colorado. I know if I ever see it being done I will get a big kick out of it.

Seriously do you buckle up any heavy object in the car so it doesn't cause an injury in an accident. I hear backpacks can have some wild interaction with a windshield during a wreck, as can groceries. LAffin. City folks just dont' get it.
First, let me say I could not care less what you do in your car or truck. Yes, I do anchor heavy objects in the SUV, including the dog. If you don't want to do so, have at it my friend.

If you believe a child commiting a crime has nothing to do with the parents we definitely are having a comprehension issue.

I would be naive to think you might hold a dog owner responsible for his dog's actions. :)

I have had a couple dogs durning my 60 some years of living but will never own one again. Experiences? Let me start first by saying one dog is just one dog, two dogs is the start of a pack, and the more you add to that the worse it gets. Many years ago we had a small heard of sheep up north and a pack of dogs killed almost all of them and the ones they didn't we had to shoot ourselves. Not because the sheep were out but because the dogs got in and just had a blast killing them and chewing them up. We did find the pack and destroyed them before they did anymore damage some where else. All 42 sheep were lost.

Then marriage and kids came along and wanted a dog. Lived on a nice piece of property and I was raising a few calves and noticed the dog was getting a little more interested in the calves than he should have in my option. Well make thing short caught him chasing the neighbors calves one day and took a news paper to him. Well a couple days later he did it again. This time the neighbor was home and he seen it too. I asked him did he want to take care of it or did he want me too. Won't tolerate a dog chasing livestock unless it was a herd animal and herding the cattle by my command.

The third one the X wanted her own dog and I agreed but said I didn't want anything to do with it. All hers to deal with. Nothing but trouble from the start. The final straw was I replaced the front door with a 1200 dollar solid mahogany door and trim. The X wanted it also. Well she always let the dog out in the front to do his business and the dog would scratch the door to get back in when he was done. She would do this when she was getting ready for work after I was already gone to work. I never went out the front and knew this was going on. Was picking up leaves in the fall of the year and seen the door and I blew a fuse. Told her I fixed way more than the dog cost and now he tore up a 1200 dollar door it's time to go. Dog cost 200 dollars. Don't understand how a person can have a 200 dollar animal and it cost thousands to fix what they tear up. It's a dog, not a person, hunting dogs have a purpose, herd dogs have a purpose, sled dogs have a purpose but to just get a dog just to say you have one and do nothing with it but to let it run loose and cause other people grief isn't right.

I don't have dogs. Don't want to have to fix what they mess up. I have chickens and cattle. If I feed it I eat it. Neighbors all have dogs. I have had troubles with them also. I own this property for myself and what I want to raise on it. It's not for their use nor there dogs use. My chickens or cattle are not running free messing his stuff up and crapping all over is yard for him to step in. One neighbor told me his dog was like family. I told him my grand kids was like family to but I don't let them run over there and crap on his back porch and tear up his stuff. Have another neighbor has three dogs and there in lies the pack I talked about earlier. I caught them and have several recordings of the crapping where I and the kids walk and play and even right by the back door and tearing up things. I ran them off several times and told the owner the next time I will bring his dogs back to him but he won't like how I will bring them.

Respect another's property, have some conderation for the neighbor. The one neighbor I have has a big dog and I have several recordings of it raising cane with the chickens and chasing the cattle. I told him about his dog and he said his dog never leaves his yard. Don't matter what I would say to him I am wrong and he is right. Funny I know more about what his dog is doing than he does. Security cameras will be my saving grace. In Kentucky it is a law that if a dog is harassing poultry or cattle, hog, sheep or what ever, or distroying property I can kill the dog. And if there is vet bills because of what the dog did, bit or chased thru fence or killed - the dog owner is liable. Be a good neighbor and a better dog owner, keep your dogs on your property. At least for the neighbors that respect your property and have consideration for you and your property.
