Thanks for the adjustment directions, I'm curious, what is the purpose of that thin piece of metal. I'm guessing it must be slotted all the way to the end we can't see because if it wasn't the four bolts would hold it in place.

The thin piece of metal is the shim. One or more of them are used to set the proper axle bushing free play. The slots allows it to slide over the bolts. Tightening the bolts sandwiches it in place.
Update: John Deere came out to my property and pushed the shim back down and tightened the bolts that were loose, he did not check the measurement between the Axle housing and the bushing, when I get a chance I will check it myself to make sure it's correct. Tractor was under warranty so I thought I would see how quick they would respond.
