What makes more sense...driving a long paid for old truck, or making huge payments??

If I owned ANY Government Motors vehicle.. I would immediately trade it in and upgrade to ANY other vehicle made.

I think hating an entire corporation because of the CEOs is like hating an entire country because of the politicians.

In a Democratic society that is entirely acceptable. The politicians are there because of the citizens of that country. :)

I bought my vehicle new. Paid cash, and still have it eight years later. It provided many years of repair free service. People never figure that into the "1/3 value lost when you drive it off the lot". My friend only buys used, and immediately has all kinds of repairs and repeats this every three years or so. What a hassle!.

Vehicles are never investments. Everything depreciates. New stuff depreciates faster.

I've done it both ways - new and used. Depends on the vehicle and how it was cared for by the prior owner(s) if a used one is going to be dependable or a money pit. Never regretted a new vehicle I bought.

It wouldn't make sense to buy a new vehicle and find out you hate it and it's a big mistake for you to keep it 15 years just to avoid the loss on trading. But, if you normally keep a vehicle a long time then buying new can be fine.

Two 'rules':
1) There is one thing guaranteed to keep a working man poor. A new car.

2) Every day you drive a paid for car you are making money.

My large farmer friend says, "think hard before buying paint".

This is from a man that owns millions of dollars of green paint.

He plans a payout plan. If it can't logically work on paper, he's out.

Americans REQUIRE transportation. Us country people pay for it in the cost of vehicles. The big city people pay for it in the cost of their taxes to support mass transit. No one escapes.

So guy that buys a brand new vehicle 17 years ago, doesn't drive it ever, thinks it stupid that someone else buys a new vehicle like he did?

Oh absolutely. Excellent point. Just saying, guys get defensive about our choices. I've bought new trucks. Currently driving a 17 year old truck I bought used. :)

I understand. But I also understand there are posters on this thread that would "wear out" your $2200 truck in a month. So there's a place for both. :)
