To my mind .17HMR is a solution in search of a problem. We have a Lefty Savage Mark II. Their rimfire rifles are designed in MA but built by Ross in Canada.

That looks like it would make a good 'ladies' rifle or a starter rifle for one of the kids.

Little heavy for the kids lol. My 12 year old daughter weighs like 65 lbs and the rifle as shown is about 8.5 lbs

Nice. I have two Savage rimfires; a MkII-G in .22LR that I've had for about 25 years now, and a 93-G in .22WMR that I've had for about 5 years. I really enjoy them both. Good rifles at a reasonable price.

I have a Savage .17 HMR that came with a pretty nice scope and it is dead on accurate. It is a bit heavy with the bull barrel and for a while .17HMR shells was hard to find but no longer a problem.
I think if I were buying again today I might look for a .17 WSM (Winchester Super Magnum) rifle. This uses a .27 caliber shell casing necked to a .17 so it carries a lot more powder than the .22 hull. The ballistics on it are far better than the .17HMR although I have no idea what the cost of ammo for this gun might be. One review I read said that the bullet was so fast that small game ran off without realizing that they were mortally wounded. I have had the same thing happen with crows that I shot with the .17HMR but they don't get far before dropping dead. I am sure that if I were shooting larger predators like coyotes, the .17 WSM would be much better especially at 200+yards away.

I have a 17HMR and I love it.
If not for the cost I would sell all my 22's and use nothing but the HMR.

I checked on prices of the .17 WSM vs .17HMR (used Ammoseek.com) and it looks like they are about $.04 per round higher @ $.24 per round vs $.20. Both are about 2-2.5 times the cost of .22LR but still pretty cheap for a high velocity round. These prices don't include shipping cost and are not realistic to normal gun shop costs but should be OK for comparison.
