Just because it says Houston doesn't mean he actually lives there. He also says his internet is not much over dial-up speed... so turning on WIFI will do squat for him.

My 5+ year old I phone 4 has wifi you can turn on for the kids devices. Most smartphones do.

Mine does too, but if you have slow or no cell data service for the phone, the phone and any devices connected to the phone through wifi won't be able to access anything.

We run into this a lot around here. You can make a call, and you can send a text, but bring up a browser or app and the connection is not strong enough to do anything with data. You'll have 5 bars of service, but its slow speed, like 2G, not 4G, or LT or LTE.

What carrier do you have that has wifi so slow it won't work on the internet?

I had the same problem with poor signal until we got a tower within a mile of the house. Had to use a signal booster up in the attic and it improved the signal a bar or two. That may be a solution for poor cell signal for the OP.

If you are looking for reasons this won't work so be it. I'm offering a solution that might be an option worth considering since the OP has limited choices. Most cell plans have adequate speed to do most things on the internet. Most cell plans have data and it might easier to do that for occasional use for the kids than it is to purchase a separate plan. I have cell tower internet at my house and stream TV regularly. I also use my Verizon I phone to let my daughter run her I pad when we travel. I know both will work for streaming and kids playing on the internet.

Verizon on one and T-mobile on the other. There's little to no signal at many places just 2-3 miles out of town around here. It happens in many rural areas. Here's a map of the cell towers in our area.... guess where my wife's family lives? In the hole with no towers.

I'm not looking for reasons this won't work. You yourself said you had the same problem until they put a tower up within a mile of your house.

The OP said he has no internet access at anything over dial-up speeds. I'm assuming that means cell phone service as well.

And its not the WIFI that's slow. The WIFI is fast between devices. WIFI doesn't connect you to the internet. WIFI connects you to another device (a router, your cellphone hotspot, etc...) that connects you to the internet. If the internet speed is slow, all the WIFI speed in the world won't get you any faster internet connection.

You know what I meant by slow WIFI. No need for the lesson professor.

I had the problem of poor cell signal until I used a booster. That problem was solved a long time ago.

If a person has no choices any option should be looked at IMO.

Speaking of which do you have a solution to offer the OP? Or are you just here to tell me why what I said won't work for the OP and give lessons on how wifi works. LOL.
