How much of a job to replace the clutch on a ck30. Is it a job that that the average home mechanic can do?

Others have done it but I would not attempt it without a climate-controlled building with a concrete floor and overhead hoist. This job requires splitting the tractor (disconnect all electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic connections between the engine and back end) and rolling one end back from the other while supporting both ends at the junction. Replacing the clutch disk is like on a car; no big deal. But getting it all aligned and bolted/reconnected is a challenge. This is all much harder with a cab.

So I think it is a big job with a few hard parts and many detailed parts. It was much easier on an older tractor, like a Ford 8n or Massey x35.

Thank,s that sounds like i don't want to do that job. The tractor only has about 600 hours on it. The clutch is not totally gone, but it does slip under load in 4th gear. I left my neighbor use it and he was running in 4th gear while thinking it was in 2nd i guess. It is still usable but i don't like it. I have not inquired what a dealer would charge to do the job. Anybody have any idea what it might cost? Thanks for your input

Like any clutch, a tractor clutch can last a very long time or you can kill it in a day if you ride the clutch.

Try adjusting it with 1" free play.

Excellent point! If your clutch is slipping that will really accelerate wear. Maybe all you need is an adjustment. As I recall, both the owners manual and shop manual include this simple procedure and it is a routine scheduled maintenance item (like changing motor oil).

It's really not that bad to replace the clutch. The first time I did it, I changed out the drive disc, pressure plate & throw out bearing. Took it apart on a Friday afternoon and had it back together Saturday evening. The next time, I decided to replace the whole clutch assembly since the PTO disc was starting to slip and I had to pull the tractor apart any how to make tranny repairs. All I used was a "bottle" jack under the trans and a floor jack with a 2x4 under the oil pan, of coarse all this was done on a concrete floor. Disconnect everything and pull the tractor apart using the floor jack making sure to keep it level. Now the "PITA" part; when putting back together, keeping it all level & square, then getting the PTO shaft splines and the tranny shaft splines to line up and go into the discs.........patients and perseverance is virtue here!

Well since I do "commercial" mowing and I use a flail mower, I do a lot of "clutch feathering" when backing into corners of fence lines, under trees etc.. The first clutch change was at 1,650 hrs.. This last time I decided just install a whole new assembly since I knew I needed to change the PTO disc this time and I had the tractor split to do repairs to the transmission and it had, at that point, 4,589 hrs. on it. So i figured I'd probably need not only the PTO disc but also the presser plate & diaphragm and so on.
There really was no need to change the "driving disc" as it was working fine. It was just more economical and convenient to put in all new parts at that time avoiding a possible break down due to the clutch during mowing season. And yes, I know I'm going to get a bunch of flack about "slipping" the clutch on a tractor!
