Back when I bought my first home and calling it a home would be a stretch as it was in bad shape... I worked on it for a year nights and weekends and had put up a real nice redwood privacy fence with a gate.
Come home and it looks like a car drove through it... neighbor said a police car did the damage and she had the name of the officer and badge number.
Apparently... a police officer several cities away was after a fleeing felon and it ended in my backyard...
I cleaned up the mess, bought new material and went to the city asking for $227 to cover the material... the city said it doesn't work this way... I then said how does it work?
I had to file a claim and be denied and then I could sue...
I let the city manager know this was all new to me but I was willing to learn... I came back with a claim and asked how soon before I can file my lawsuit and I intended to name the police officer, his partner, the city and the mayor as head of the city in my claim...
The next day I get a call saying the city decided to pay my claim... and was told it was rare but the reality is it would cost the city thousands to defend and lost time for city employees...
When I went to get my check I had to sign about a dozen forms... holding the city harmless, full settlement for past, current and future, hold harmless all the individuals, etc...
It did feel good getting my check and I was 23 at the time...
