I know tires can be recapped, but when should you do it and when should you just buy new?
Additional question...
I ran over something and blew out a tire and tube. I took it to the repair shop and they put a big patch in the tire and a new tube. It has been about a year now and I just noticed that the hole is opening up. It is about 2 inches wide at its widest and is about 6 to 8 inches long. Can the tire be saved?

The tire could be foam filled but with a 2" x 8" opening in the tread it seems like the belts inside the tire are gone and it probably should be replaced.

You don't indicate what the tire is on, but if its 2" x 8" - I think its time to replace the tire.

It is a R1 24 in front tire on a 90 hp NH 4WD with FEL.
I can not see any sign of belts inside. It looks like solid rubber. (not suggesting that it is solid rubber)

We used to use farm tractors for logging. cut the side walls and punctured many a tractor tire on a stomp or stobb. we would take a drill and drill laceing holes along the cuts and use baleing wire to lace them back up. Put a piece of old intertube inside over the lace wire and go back to work. Poor folks have poor ways and you did what you had to do.

We used to be able to vulcanize a split like that with new rubber and the tire would look like new. I doubt you could find a place that does that any more. If you have a recap place they may be able to help you, otherwise, I think you are going to have to buy a new tire.

Take a picture.
If it lasted a year... A little better repair might be just the thing.
Look for a company that repairs heavy equipment tires

I think it is time to scrap the tire and get a new one, at least new to you. The scrap tire can be used as a flower pot.

Thanks for posting. I was racking my brain trying to understand the association between a flat tire and melting metal. Now I know where to start.
