I'm one of those few on here who has a tractor but no front end loader. Oh, I'd like to have one but haven't been able to make one or scrape up the $$ to buy one. BUT, if I did, I'd have one of these around without the tank to use as a "manlift cage". The idea occurred to me a few years ago and don't think I've ever shared it. Seems logical. I have owned a few of these tanks and they're very handy. I was looking at one I had that was pretty much beyond use due to it setting out in the elements and the tank was deteriorating. Seems the idea never went beyond just giving it away. Has anyone ever considered doing this? Some call them totes, some call them IBC tanks. A little ingenuity and you could have a hinged door going into it or just crawl in and out. What do you think?

It would be a good starting point, especially if you had a free one, or one where the plastic tank had deteriorated from sunlight, like yours. All it would need would be a floor and some toe rails if you weren't going to use it on a site which required the "OSHA approved" stamp of approval. Skinny wheel a door and come up with some hinges and a latch, maybe frame in some fork pockets so it didn't slide from side to side and it would be a nice secure platform.

Forget making a hinged door, just a couple of chains with hooks, one mid height and another at the top would provide protection from falling out.
I have seen some commercial units made that way.

I think you have a good idea for those needing a manlift. It already has the FORK pockets so it should work with just a plywood bottom to stand on. NOW, just get that FEL by hook or crook, because you sure need one.

Too junky to risk you life on. The pallets are usually rotten out by the time the tank fails, the metal is very thing tubing and probably impossible to reinforce the area cut to create a door.

I had a chunk of expanded metal catwalk laying around, and enough other scrounged material to make a basket. The hinges are a regular door hinge cut in half and trimmed to fit, it has a dog kennel latch on the door now. Not seen are a couple of bed frame angle irons on the bottom to help guide the forks to the far pockets. Even the paint on the welds was rattle can remnants that wasn't enough for anything else, so all I have into this is welding consumables. I like cheap projects.

IBC's = international bulk containers. Now you know!

Great idea! I was about to make a man basket for easy reach platform. Glad i read this. You saved me time and money since I have a tank that blew up on me when I was filling it up with water. Those trash pumps are pretty powerful. I forgot to take off the cap to let the pressure out. Warning! It blew with extreme force.

If you have a carry-all with 2 forks attachment for the 3-point you could add a top link connection to the lower frame, flip it over, hook it up and put your man basket on it. Now you have a work platform on your 3-point that will allow you to stand anywhere from 3-6 feet off the ground.

I have one of those wire boxes, I can get them for free... BUT, I like these plastic apple boxes MUCH better,

The apple boxes are much safer to work out of too...

I just strap a good wooden pallet to the forks.

I've used a pallet or just the bucket before, but I like my platform with rails a lot better.

We used to do that at work with forklifts and a step ladder on top of the pallet to reach warehouse lights.

I was young and bulletproof back then

Yes, but is it unsafe for your wife? The pictures aren't suggesting YOU use it. That's would just be crazy! :D

As for the picture, my wife weighs half as much as me and if I would have gotten up there and stood on that 2x4 I'd been on the ground along with the hole side of her chicken pen. Would it be safer to stand on the top rung of a ladder setting on uneven ground than standing on 20 square feet of pallet strapped to a set of forks? If a person is dumb enough to lean out too far they will fall. The problem with rails on man-lifts, from what I have witnessed, is people climbing the rails to reach higher which negates the safety of the railing. I have over 4000 hours running JD 244, 444, 644 loaders and 310 backhoes. When we use a man lift attached to the loader at work the crew always asks me to run the machine because they trust my ability to do it safely, and so does my wife when running our loader. I have high-back forks so there is something for her to hold on to as I'm raising them while keeping the forks level. Is my wife capable of running the loader with me on the forks? No, she does not have enough experience.

But your right, it would be unsafe for you, I'd dump you just for the fun of it. :D
