I haven't measured mine, but I think it's more than 36 and I wish it was more.

1. Need more bracing on the tines
(look at how similar grapples are braced)
2. Round support tubes are too small.
3. Agree that holes are too small to be worthwhile
4. And yep, flat plate on the lid is a big waste of weight and time.

Already at 300#....By the time you go to larger pipe, add some gussets to those tine tips, add the cylinder and SSQA mount, you are in the 400# range. Which is about the normal for the lighter end of grapples.

I'd not go any less than 3/8" regardless of material. And gusset the crap out of them tines.

Kudos to you for designing and wanting to build yourself, but there is nothing unique about your design. And you can buy a grapple for ~$1000. How much do you figure you will be invested in material/welding supplies/cylinder building that. And whats your time worth?

Don't bother building it'll never work out in the to the better in the end. Titan has a functional 48" grapple for right at a grand and Everything Attachments has wonderful works of art for just a few hundred more.

I disagree. Now I doubt he can build it cheaper than the $1000 grapple, but better is certainly possible.

That's not what I'm saying I agree the 1000$ Titan grapple is cheaply made but it is functional if you want better then go with the EA grapple at 1600$. If you build on the same grade as the EA grapple you'll be doing good to save a few hundred bucks at the expense of all your labor and design time. Now if you just want to build it to be able to say you did it then by all means have at it.

The material is free!
I will build it, now i just need to fine tune the design
Thanks for all the help - keep the suggestions coming!

Ok made some changes.

1. Added cylinder and ss attachment plates
2. Changed 1" rod to 1 1/2" x 1/4" wall tube
3. Changed hole size for weight reduction - still doesn't do much but every little bit helps.
4. Removed most of the top plates and added tube support to top clam.
Keep the comments coming!
Thanks
