cutting holes in steel gate post for hinge bolts

My dad still has that craftsman 1/2" geared down cast drill with the twenty pound trigger pull, on/off switch. As a hundred and twenty pound teenager that thing just about ripped my arm off a time or two and many times ended up wrapping it's cord around itself. I bet, that cord is still like new. QUALITY! It had the 1/2 inch pipe you could thread into the top for holding onto and a D handle you could attach to the back.

I have one of those. 500 rpm- single speed. Very easy to get away from you (note the spliced cord) :)

That looks just like the blankety blank thing that nearly broke my wrist!

Sold mine years ago for just that reason, sold Dad's also when clearing his estate. They may have been best available in the '60's but no thanks, today.

I don't understand the purpose of the D handle. Maybe just for carrying it from one place to another or hanging it on the wall. Holding the D handle while drilling anything substantial is an accident waiting to happen.

block up your gate and c-clamp the thing in place. weld the hinge in place. Drill will stop hurting you when cord is wrapped around enough to get pulled out of wall.

I have two of those old beasts. Never lock the trigger to the on position. At least one of mine has a lock position.

That advice comes a little late for me. I used the lock button and that's why I had to splice my cord :)

Funny stuff. Last time I checked, a 5/8" hole was just not all that big of a problem.

This reminds me of the thread where the guy wants to trim a couple 2" branches and forum guys start talking about their 36" chainsaws, as if they even remember the last time it was used or even who has it now. Or if they actually ever owned one.:D

Don't want your shirt tangled up in that D-handle. Erik that drill-beast needs a male plug at that splice. Then you stand back, with one foot tightening the extension cord.

1 - I think Bob has left the building, hasn't posted since his first question -

2 - Bob never mentioned hole size, Koua was the first to talk about 5/8 - several of my tube gates have a ring at each hinge point that has an INCLUDED 3/4" bolt welded on (it's at least 10" long and comes with nuts and washers)

3 - Sodo, thanks fer the link to those smaller annular cutters, scheming on the smaller set now - I have 2" DOC cutters for my Hougen that start at 7/16" and go up to 1-1/2" but I'm so spoiled by annular cutters now (plus, I'm older than dirt) that I don't even like to drill any hole too small for the mag drill any more  ...Steve
