When I grew up there was a guy over in MT that had a pair of stacked Moonrakers and a vfo that went down to 11 meters. 2kw on ch 19 let him talk to any cb within 500 miles, even if they couldn't answer him.

Was he ever caught and were any charges ever filed?

It has always amazed me that CB "hobbyists" that break all the rules to operate only on 11 meters, when an Amateur radio license is so easy to obtain and opens up a complete new world of operating frequencies and operating modes that can all be legally accessed with legal power levels up to 1500 watts.
Why would one choose to be a scofflaw when all it takes is a bit of study and gaining some knowledge to get licensed? I was first licensed when I was 16, It wasn't that hard. It is always been a mystery to me.

There used to be quite a few people around here like that with huge amps on the CB. Just don't hear about them anymore. Internet and social media is where everyone yells now.

That and the current state of the sunspot cycle really sucks if all you have is 27Mhz to play with. No F2 layer propagation up on those frequencies, still some Sporadic E, but that is about it. All of us Licensed Hams are busy building and improving out antenna systems for our lower frequency bands below 20 meters as our upper bands are hurting too. Not much relief in sight for several years until the sun becomes more active.

You know, you'd be talking Greek to most kids these days. But then, you'd be talking Greek to most kids those days, too.

I don't think he ever got caught, and it's kind of odd that he'd do that as he was an amateur license holder. Of course that was at the peak of the '70's C.W.McCall cb craze, and about every 5th OTR truck had a 100w Palomar inline. I doubt that the FCC had the reach to get into the wastelands of our area. That was an active sun cycle time, I remember the skip that would come in on am, and especially on lsb. For the record, we did have the $5 cb license, and I got one of my own, which is around here somewhere. I think they were a lifetime issue, like the aircraft restricted radiotelephone license.

It is odd, but I have heard of it before. Risk you license that you worked to obtain, that offers a 1000 times more privileges, to join a bunch on the CB band.. Never made sense to me.

And what I didn't I started looking up. Its always fun to learn.

Now you know more about F2 ionospheric layer radio wave propagation and such than you ever wanted to know. :D When you get it all figured out let me know so I can ask you some questions. I think a guy could spend a lifetime studying this and still not fully understand everything.
