5403 3pt hydraulic problem

Here is what happens while using disk harrow... after disking a 1-2 acre plot about an hour, lifting the disk at the end of each pass, the disk will not lower. If I shut the tractor off it will drop, then I can crank up and make a couple more rows and it repeats. While the disk is up I can hear a louder whine. The rockshaft housing under the seat gets really hot.
I change the hyd filter once a year and the metal screen was checked last year and was clean. I have adjusted the rate of drop knob several times but that did not help.
Anyone have any advice? Thanks.

It maybe this, just make sure you have nothing on the 3PT or it is blocked up before doing this.

I just fixed my tractor that also had only 60 hours on it. The problem is corrosion in the rate of drop valve located underneath the seat. Remove the seat, and you will find the valve that controls the rate of drop. Be prepared for some hyd fluid to leak out and the hitch to drop. Remove the three allen head screws and remove the cover. Inside the cover you will find a cylinder about 3/4" in diameter. Pull it out using a pliers, it may be stuck. This is the first place you will notice the corrosion. Once you have the cylinder out, there is a plunger on the opposite end. This plunger/piston is what is jammed or stuck. Break it loose and work it till it operates freely. There isn't much else you can do to it other than clean it. Then reassemble. According to the dealer I spoke with, the problem is caused by the fluid absorbing moisture, thus causing the corrosion. No recommendation for prevention, but it is an easy fix once you have done it. Good luck.

JD5210, I read those threads. The difference with mine is that it does not hang up until after an hour or so of lifting and lowering at the ends of the plot use and the hyd oil/system gets hot then it starts hanging up.. Could that still be the drop valve rusty?

I do not have experience with this, but it would not hurt to take a look at it. Just a reminder again, make sure the 3PT is down or blocked up as it is my understanding it will go down once you take the drop rate valve out.

it sounds more like a rockshaft hydraulic valve problem rather than the rate of drop control. An internal bypass of the fluid is causing the hydraulic oil to over heat. Could be several things on your tractor, draft control or feedback linkage adjustment are two things I would look at first.

Thanks. That sounds like it may be the problem. I'm not skilled enough to do that work. Probably take it in to dealer. Hate to spend the money, but don't want to tear up something else. Thanks.
