45' high ice.
It shakes when the waves blow and grinds when the ice moves.
They originally put it up for auction in 2016, but the Coast Guard couldn't make an inspection because of " a string of bad luck with weather conditions"

It's 7 miles out into Lake Michigan, north of Green Bay, South of Big and Little Bay de Noc's...

I quit visiting "scenic" lighthouses years ago.

There's a great driving tour around Lake Michigan called the Lake Michigan Circle Tour. And there are Harbor Tours off of that route. My wife and I have driven it in its entirety twice, once in each direction. Many lighthouses along the way.

Very interesting story, although much that I don't understand at all, such as a "crib", towing it out there, then sinking it, etc.

Crib is a container of some type. In this case built onshore and then floated to location? Then it's filled with material heavier than water and sunk to rest on the bottom to make a platform for building on.

Cribs are a concert or steel wall that's built at a harbor facility but they might be square, round or even just a walls that are joined at the site.. These are floated out to the location needed and sunk. Then they are normally filled with rip-rap (rock) to hold them down.

Light houses are up for sale now and then and many here are privately owned. Speaking of which, shipping on the the upper lakes is opening soon!

A few years ago, a guy bought the light tower off of Cape Hatteras.

I have seen some videos taken from the tower during storms and I don't wanna be on that tower in a storm.

Parts of the tower have fallen off but supposedly it is still structurally sound. :confused3: I wonder if the owner is liable if the tower fails for whatever reason.

Wrong side of the world for you Dave, but the Tybee Island (GA) lighthouse is about as Jimmy Buffett as it is possible to be.
