50 hour service...

First night, my trusty plier type filter wrench won't budge the hydrostatic transmission filter. All I could do is scratch the paint off.

Second night, go by the autoparts store and buy a band wrench for the filter. Still no luck, even with a 2' cheater bar.

Ended up using a screwdriver and hammer to tap the filter body and break it loose. Discovered that the filter body actually has "teeth" on the end to do this once I got it off.

Crazy that these are as tight as they are.

Standard automotive practice. Get a 500lbs gorilla to crunch it on, then add paint on top to further glue it on there. Americans seem to skip the paint/glue step, but every factory has that same gorilla installing filters.

My old L3200 was like that, expect my new L4060 will be in another 30 hours.

Yeah, they are all pretty much the same, I use a cupped filter wrench or one with fingers, have also used a chain wrench. Age has crept up on me and now I just hand one of my sons the proper supplies and I keep the grands occupied.

I think that they install them "dry", no oil on the gasket, then paint it into place and they use the gorilla:D.
The original filter on my Massey looked like twisted scrap by the time I got it loose.

I think those guys go cuckoo with those pneumatic air wrenches at the factory. I had a similar issue with my Kubota.

I think we all did when we changed the filters for the first time. :irked:

The hydro filter is extra tight due to the pressure it must withstand. The other hydraulic filter is a suction filter I.e. vacuum. The hydro filter handles over 300 psi, much greater than an engine filter. If you check, you will see it is of much sturdier construction to withstand the pressure.

I just changed the filters on my RTV900XT. The suction filter had instructions on the body to tighten finger tight, then 2/3 turn. The hydro filter had instructions to tighten finger tight, then add 1 1/4 extra turns. My old L5740 and replacement L6060 have torque values to which one should tighten the filter but the only way I can do that is with a fish scale pulling on my strap wrench. Instead I go tight as I can reasonably get it knowing the high pressure it must withstand and how quickly things can go south if the gasket blows out. I've seen that happen on inadequately tightened hydro filters in cold temperatures.

My 50 hour service on my M6040 was the same. Oil filter was only tight. The two hydraulic filters were the nightmares. However, I had read about this situation already on TBN and was prepared with a new band wrench. I had to pull so hard - I saw stars before I got the two off.

I was around when Kubota was discovering the need for reinforced HST filters. B8200HST's were blowing up their hydro filters like balloons, we discovered they were seeing pressure spikes well over 500 psi. They eventually came out with the style filters they have now. The first couple iterations from the filter manufacturers couldn't hold up either.
