It started as a vertical column in an underground parking garage. There was going to be a 10 story building on top of it.

Not that I want to criticize anyone for wanting to do a cool project, but have to wonder why? Overkill is a massive understatement.

And how are you going to move it, and with what?. 17' of that beam is in the 3600# range. That cylinder likely to add another 1000#. Axle....Another 1000#+. 100 gallon resivor, pump, massive valve, misc....Another 500#. Motor...500#. 100 gallons of oil...800#. gonna easily be a 8000-9000# splitter if not more.

As to functionality, its not gonna cycle very fast. A cylinder that size, just to cycle out and back 24" is gonna be a 14-second cycle. Which is on the slower end of what's made today.

With 165 HP and not really needing alot of psi to do the work, I'd go a good but bigger on the pump.

But all that flow comes at a price. Large hoses, fittings, and valves. You are likely gonna spend more in just the hoses than most people spend in a whole splitter.

That is going to be a WILD project. How in the world do you plan on hefting "logs" up onto the I-beam and holding them in place during the splitting cycle. One tiny slip - the log rolls off the I-beam and I hope nobody's around to get crushed.

I see a skid loader with forks...

Anything that requires that much force in order to split is going to come apart like a bomb.

fun times though... fun times...

Fair enough... but despite the throw of the cylinder... do you think it required 76T of pressure to do it? I would think a much smaller cylinder would do the job, if it had the extension.

I'm not knocking it... but for something to 'require' that much pressure, I still think it would explode. I love people's ability to make things though. It is my favorite human ability.

Let's hope NH Mike adds a pressure gauge to answer that question! If you are splitting 3 foot diameter logs with 4 or 6 way split, I could imagine 40 ton might not do it...

Not necessarily.

Bell's Super Log Splitter - YouTube

I can't say I would spend the time and money building it, but will certainly follow along.

Nice video. But is there a market for what's coming off that splitter?

Still needs cut, and still needs split smaller to be used for firewood. Cutting split/splintered wood with a chainsaw is a pita. So what was really accomplished, and was any time saved?
