Anyone hunt morel mushrooms?

People are finding morels in central Iowa. That is about three weeks earlier than usual start of the morel season. We didn't hit our woods yet so we can't confirm that. Oak buds are swollen ready to pop but no leaves so far.

Visited with my large farmer friend today. Last year they finished planting corn (12,000 acres) and started planting beans on 15 April. Only have 1,000 acres planted so far this year.

Strange weather indeed.

I haven't tried to find any mushrooms this year. Was in the timber today doing some work and by looking at the foliage, I think mushrooms could be found.

That reminds me of the weather hear last year. Same thing you mentioned. Very early planting last year. No one's planting here, yet, but it should start soon.

Last fall, about 2 months after the corn harvest was over, many fields had tall green growth that appeared to be corn. This was December. Talked to a couple farmers that we know and they confirmed, yes, it was corn. It was so warm and wet, that the corn that blew out of the combine sprouted and grew. One of them said they knew of a farmer that harvested it for silage.

Hope to get out in the woods this week and see the winter/spring wind damage at our place. Will look for mushrooms for fun, too.

Whereabouts you at? We were down around Wabash and Huntington hiking yesterday. Didn't see any mushrooms. Lots of little wildflowers in the woods, though. It was a great day, weather-wise.

A little farther south near Lafayette. I actually just stumbled on them while cutting some blow down trees from last year.

We have spent considerable time (and money!) at Purdue over the last 6 years. One graduated 2 years ago and another started there this year. I'm fairly familiar with the backroads between here and there, as I rarely take the same way, always looking for interesting places to stop.

Yes, they did. What's really shocking is Purdue hasn't had a tuition increase in several years!

Hit our woods today. Didn't find a single mushroom. Found two dead deer though. That makes three total for this season. I hate stupid hunters.
