I am 84 years old, lived in mushroom hunting area all my life. Never heard anything such as a false morel. Morels are distinctive.

Be sure to drill holes in your collection bucket, this will allow spores to escape and regenerate to ground as you walk through the forest.

We live in south IA. When oak leaves are the size of mouse ear it is time to start looking. My wife is a city girl who never mushrooms hunted until she met me. She is somewhat fanatical shroomer now. We collect oyster mushrooms (several kinds), giant puffbals, maitakee, butter mushrooms and morels. Dyer's saddle is also edible but it is tough so we stopped collecting it. If there is large crop of mushrooms we dry them for winter use. We use vicker baskets or nets to carry mushrooms.

I've picked a few when in areas they grow. Never hunted them though. They were highly prized when I was a young lad. Ventured forth many times with a milk bucket that would get filled.

Fried in butter! Free range eggs. Home grown cured bacon. Just a simple Breakfast.

Didn't know the term "false Morel" then but any that had a sorta convoluted look or off colour were left behind.

Keep thinking about trying to start some out at the lake but so far it's always been next year.

Is it possible to transplant these to a new location? My property is just like the areas I find them in but have never found them however there are lots of other mushrooms and puffballs that grow. I am not a mushroom expert so I am too afraid to eat what I don't know about.

My late father-in-law, who I considered to be the most knowledgeable mushroom person on the planet, tried for years to get morels to grow in different places... was never successful.. but he still tried every year.
Finding and eating morels can be very addictive. LOL. And people will try some desperate measures to get them.
