Allis Chalmers HD-3
I'm looking for a new starter for my Allis Chalmers HD-3 (D-15 Diesel uses the same starter). I have found many part numbers but all are obsolete and don't cross over to a valid part number. Can anyone help?

Wouldn't a regular Delco Remy starter from any Detroit 2/71 fit.

There's an old Allis HD-3 at the farm but its tic season, I'm allergic to the buggers. So your part number would have to wait until fall and I'm sure someone on this forum will have it for you long before the snow flies.

Thanks but I have a Used one that I'm looking at having rebuilt but I want a good part number for a new starter. I'm repurposing the engine and putting it in my boat and need the ability to just buy or order a replacement without going through what I am now for parts.

I am not sure that you will be able to find a new one. I know parts for those are getting really hard to find. Good luck though!

Measure the outside diameter of your bendix gear then do a tooth count, the 2/71 in the HD would have had a CW starter. The problem with the Allis number is that it would have been proprietary to their parts book and not that of Delco.who actually manufactured the starter.

I once had a Lincoln portable welder with the 2 / 71 engine and I'm sure that engine had many other applications, I would go with the most recent and popular piece of equipment in which the starter would interchange and use that as my part number.

On our forestry skidder that came with a 4/71 it had a 12 volt starter we changed to 24 volt for easier starting in cold weather. We don't like either.

The highway tractor that I borrowed to get my CDL had a 6/71 equipped with an air starting motor

Rotation and tooth count, the nose cone if the bolt pattern is different most will swap over to most delco made heavy duty starters.
