I have a mf50 gas tractor and engine will not turn over. Battery is hot. Only way I can start it is turn ignition on and jump across solenoid Neutral/ safety switch or something else? I was using the rotary cutter and tractor died like you turned off the ignition switch. Now you have to jump across solenoid.

Which solenoid are you talking about? Do you have to jump the starter solenoid to get it to crank over and start?
You said it died, so I am guessing it is an ignition power solenoid.
Where on the tractor is the solenoid?

I'm not familiar with that model tractor, but I'd check any safety switches first.

The key statement you made is very very important. You said the battery is hot.

That means you are pulling a lot of amps out of the battery and normally that means a grounding short or direct short that is not constant but the fuse 's not blowing.

In either case I'd be real careful or you could start melting something.

I took that to mean the battery isn't dead.

The battery has 12.9 volts not dead or as we say the battery is good. I did some more testing and found that a connection on the neutral safety switch was bad. Cleaned connection and tractor engine turns over and starts correctly. The starter solenoid was how I was starting it before by by jumping it across solenoid. Another problem I've been having is when using the tractor and having to back up and go forward often by shifting gearshift it will hang up or stick in forward or reverse. I have been removing round inspection cover to the left of shifter and moving big gear either forward or backward and it unlocks until it decides to do it again. Is there an adjustment or is something wore out?

The battery is good, no high amps. Hot is just a term that the battery is good not hot to the touch.

The starter solenoid mounted about 6 " above the starter. It has an ignition switch and a separate starter button. This is 1956 mf 50 Massey Ferguson gas engine.
