Distributor question

My Dad gave me a Massey Ferguson 65. It runs and does what I need to do. I was wanting to get rid of the 12 volt generator and install an alternator. After reading up on things I found that I can install an electronic ignition conversion kit but here is my issue. According to the book that came with the tractor, the distributor that is on it is a D1112583 and it needs to be a D1112644 in order to install the kit. I have looked all over the internet and I can not seem to find much on the original. I was wondering if I could change the distributor to the 2644 or not?

I guess I'll throw 2 cents worth in here...So...if your generator is working/your voltage reg. is working and the distributor is in good shape...why change anything? I have a 135 Massey with the 4 cyl Cont. engine...original gen./orig voltage reg. and ...oh heck.. original EVERYTHING. Starts on the first turn every time...runs great. So..again...if its running good (you haven't said it isn't)..why tempt fate? BobG in VA

Yeah. I would but the generator is not charging the battery like it should and I have to jump it or put the battery on a charger. It lasts quite a while but it is not working like it should. I got things figured out as far as the distributors. I have an alternator on the way along with a conversion kit for electronic ignition. Thanks for the 2 cents. I don't like to spend money if I don't have to but I figured if I was going to have to spend the money replacing the generator, I might as well update all of it.

I'm in the same spot with my MF 150. I've had the generator rebuilt 3 times now and I'm so over fooling with it that it's not even a little funny. I found a very knowledgeable tech at an online company who found me an alternator with a tach drive. I also found a "new" generator on amazon, but it was double the cost of the alternator. I also went with the electronic ignition a few years ago because I couldn't keep the points set correctly.....drove me nuts.

I'm betting that voltage regs. are most likely your issues, rather than the gens..I put a voltage reader on the battery and adusted/re-adjusted the volt. reg. a few times till I got it correct...haven't had a problem since...I also had a "few" motorcycles in my youth that had dual point distibutors...sooo...I'm used to adjusting points, etc. I guess I'm just old school...and probably a "practical minimalist"... regards.
