A single 384lb unit. $4600. I'd rather have individual units, but that's JMO. Easier to carry, easier to fix, easier to upgrade later.

I've had gas powered welders... These days, I use a pto powered generator, and plug my welder into it, also I can plug a compressor into it too.

One thing I like about using a genset is, I can run lights and also have someone running a grinder as I weld... NO switching a welder to AC and then back to welding!

That got the Deutz in it Shield ? I have been lusting over the Vantage 300 with the Kubota but no way I can justify it and I can talk myself into a lot of stupid things ! My older Ranger 8 with the 16 hp Onan always does everything I ask of it.

Watch CL. There are usually some great deals to be had with engine drives. You might be able to score a Miller bobcat. Good thing with them is they are so heavy it's not likely to walk off unless they bring a tractor. I have a 250efi and it's been a great machine. 12kw I think

My friend recently purchased one of the last Vantage 500's available (phased out in favor of 600's I think).

He wasn't too impressed with the Deutz initially. It always coughed when starting and didn't run smoothly until it warmed up compared to the Cummins in his Vantage 400. He now has a couple of hundred hours on it and says it's a bit better.

I had a 5500w standby 240v portable generator and a Miller 130 240vAC, 200A rated stick. It would weld purlins using 3/32 6011s if it felt like it.

Got a 6500 240v and the same welder/rods welded just about anything i needed.

I paid $1500 for a used bobcat 225nt. Fairly low hours, 8000 watt generator.
Arc is nothing to brag about but it welds just fine.

I see them in the $800-$2000 range pretty often.

As others have noted, a 160 amp inverter running off a generator does a nice job too.

My Thermal Arc 161 burns 1/8" 7018 very nicely :)
It's also dual voltage.

I still have that old SA200 I traded for a couple of years ago. I had the machine work done and ready to put back together, but havent gotten around to it. While the sa200 is dc only, a lot of your hand grinders and drills will run off dc power as well as ac. as much as I have always wanted a portable welder, I just am not excited about having one anymore. Welding out in the field usually means crawling around under and wrenching on things. I just aint able to do that kind of work anymore. Its hard to get me to weld in my shop anymore. I really should get rid of the SA200 and let some young guy put it to good use.
