Progress. First a learning: It was suggested earlier in this thread that I engage the PTO at an rpm level above idle. Per the rpm gauge on the MX, idle is at 800 rpms. As I was fueling the tractor today and edging it back and forth at idle rpms to get it closer to the fuel tank, I changed the HST pedal pretty quickly from reverse to forward and the tractor shut down.

i am not a mechanic and out side my knowledge.

tractor shut down. as in. going from reverse to forward or vice vs. and tractor engine completely shut off on its own and died?

sounds wrong. if it is dieing. or less simply not enough REV / RPM's.

how does tractor get RPM's to show on gauge. and is there a sensor / circuit / chip / wiring harness that might be loose. that is not keeping the engine RPM's up...

I agree. Either a safety switch or something is wrong (unless he did this at idle).

As I said, the engine rpms were at idle when I just moved the HST foot pedal from reverse to forward and the tractor shut off. First time. We have less than 20 hours on the tractor and I think this was the third time refueling. Regardless, I am satisfied that slightly increasing the rpms helps with the PTO engagement. No need for any further feedback. Thanks.

I am the OP. An updating footnote: I have used the mower probably 7-8 times since my last post. Each time the PTO engagement has been successful--some lurching of the mower but nothing unusual or disturbing, and consistent with if not better than my experiences with three prior tractors and two prior rotary mowers. So, thanks again to everyone for the feedback that contributed to the resolution.

In summary, after checking many variables, the only changes I made were (1) I installed a new longer PTO shaft (free replacement provided by Everything Attachments) with a lot of overlap of its two components and therefore a lot more stability in the transmission of the energy to the mower, (2) thanks to a suggestion in this thread I have been engaging the PTO with the mower lowered to the ground in a bare spot, and (3) also thanks to a suggestion in this thread, I have been engaging the PTO with the engine at a little over 900 rpms, versus the idle rpms of 800.

When I had my M7060, that was my very first issue with the dealer. I demo'd the tractor without a cutter I had and didn't like the engagement rated. They changed an orifice in the supply line, but it only helped a small amount. Purchase a new cutter with the tractor and it was the same way even choking off the tractor at idle when the cutter was new. I did learn you can feather the turn button just a bit. That being said, traded that tractor in on a deere and it engages alot better (slower) than the Kubota, same cutter or not.

I have a M7060 with a super hard starting PTO. Changing the orifice in your PTO valve didn't help much?!
