Repairing Hog Damage.

So.... what happens if you coral and kill 30 or more hogs? Do you have other predators that will eat the hogs or do you bury them? Thats a lot of pig meat just lying around, rotting & stinking.

Some people who build the corral traps load them up and sell them. In Texas, feral hogs can only be transported to slaughter. There are some places that pay per pound and slaughter the hogs, sell the meat to markets in Europe. So I'm told. I have never taken any hogs to them. No hogs leave our traps alive.

seems to me a person could make a fortune to develop a bio virus/bacteria or any other pathogen specific to feral hogs, surely w/genome tampering these days it could be done.

It's my understanding 'they' have been working on this poison formula for years. As scared as people are about poison they would really have a fit about biological feral hog warfare.

The shooting of hogs from helicopters was legalized several years ago and a lot of people are offering services to do it. Some good videos out there too.

They haven't made a dent in the problem.

People who want to hunt hogs for sport have gotten a temporary restraining order on the TDA to stop the poisoning for awhile.

Judge blocks rule change allowing feral hog poisoning

People are either going to have to allow a poison or suffer the destruction wrought by the hogs. Poison Anita pretty but I know a lot of people who gut shoot them and turn them loose to keep from dealing with the carcass too.

The article I read was put out by TDA(Texas Dept of AG). Those hogs can be carriers of some pretty dangerous diseases and pathogenic organisms. I don't really know what to say when it comes to eating one of those beasties. By the time its been cooked long enough and hot enough - the sole of your boot might taste better.

A couple of choices for hogs is an electric fence or trained dogs. Hogs don't like either. A fence will need to be maintained on a regular basis as hogs will eventually root grounding material on to it whether it be moist dirt, wet grass or sticks. Dogs need regular maintenance too and can pose other problems. I've had them all, hogs, dogs and electric fences.

Be hard pressed to run dogs on that small of pastures unless you have complete access to all neighbors that surround that whole area. They don't respect property lines and can cause lots of issues

Leave it to politics and judges to get in the way. Sounds like those so called "sport hunters" don't own any land being decimated by those hogs.

That judge should have to keep about a dozen feral hogs in her back yard for a month or until the next hearing on that TRO. Bet it would get tossed out in about two days.

I believe I stated a possible dog issue.

To keep the dog issue as well as the hog issue at bay the ( trained ) dogs are within the confines of the electric fence with the trained hogs being on the outside.

OP QUOTE:
Anyway, aside from shooting every one I can, I need to figure out if repairing damage is worth the effort and fuel.

Without control, repairing the damage will probably not be worth the effort. That's similar to the old adage, "making the same mistake while expecting a different result".

Buford. how much acreage we talking? You can lease your hog hunting rights out to Alabama hog control , Barry Estes. He does trapping and has all the state permits etc for guided night hunts and will eradicate all he can.
