Maybe he could just fit an inline skate over the tongue jack....:cool2:

Didn't we see a roller skate or a dolly wheel for a missing car wheel or a flat tire in an earlier post?

Rented a tow dolly one time from Grand Rent All to take my daughter's Honda Accord home after it broke down. I was impressed that they check your tow vehicle and record what you are towing and what you're towing with to make sure that the tow vehicle is capable. They won't let you rent one unless the tow vehicle meets their standards for the load. Checked my truck out with engine size and everything and ran it through their computer to make sure it was okay for the load.

I told the guy I was impressed and he told me you'd be surprised how many people they say no to. Said they'll have people trying to tow full size trucks/SUVs with tiny cars or trucks that would be way over their safe limits.

I had that experience. I went to Uhaul for a car carrier to bring home my 24hp Yanmar. He said nope, my 4 cylinder Trooper would be at its tow limit just pulling his (2k empty) trailer.

So I went to a different Uhaul outlet. No problem there. But the load sure felt heavy so I went to a private truck scale and found I was pulling 5k. The tractor was spec'd to weigh 1800 lbs plus whatever its loader weighs so I suspect that aluminum Uhaul trailer was over 2k.

I drove that like a Permit load - non-traffic hours, slow, never followed another car. It was an uneventful trip but I wouldn't do it again.

I think that first place, or maybe another rental yard, told me their simplest test for renting a car hauler is the tow vehicle has to have 6-lug (or better) wheels. If they don't see that, they stop right there.

Edit: I initially said 6 lugs indicates 3/4 ton or better. It has been made clear to me many half tons also have this.

Not disputing what they told you but that makes no sense at all from their standpoint. I'm not sure there has been any full size truck made with less than 7000 lbs towing capacity which is what most rental trailers are. GM made 1/2 ton 4x4s for decades with 6 lug wheels as were (are?) Toyota pickups & some Izuzu. All the late model 1/2 tons are well over 7000 with many over 10,000.

I could be mistaken quoting 3/4 ton.

I think what he was getting at was not renting a car hauler for someone to pull with a light duty SUV like my early Trooper or Ford Explorer - or smaller. In fact I've read Uhaul wont allow towing with a first-generation Explorer at all.

I've never seen a 6 lug 3/4 ton. They're 8 lugs or more.

I've had the same experience so I bought several trailers...

My Silverado 1500 with HO 5.7, Brake Controller, tow package and 7k hitch was not suitable to tow a walk behind ditch witch or stump grinder...

I regularly tow my 7K car hauler with Model A and Model Ts and that is the reason I bought it...

The yards around here have a policy of 3/4 or better to tow any of their trailers...

The ironic part is my 3/4 Chevrolet Van with 5 liter and fully loaded with racks and shelves and no brake controller is acceptable... thing is I have to come up the last mile in first just to get home... the 5.7 has zero issues...

Go figure.

Chevy had a light duty 3/4 ton in the mid 90s that was 6 lug. Semi floater axle, 3/4 ton diff, 6 lug flanges, drum brakes rear.

But they will let you told with the Mercury version of the exact same vehicle. The reason they won't let you tow with a first-generation Explorer is due to the lawsuits from the Firestone Tire issues.
