Shoulder Replacement Surgery

Hope things go well for you Bird. Keep us updated as to your progress. I'm facing a hip and knee replacement and my left shoulder is giving me fits now. I think it's because I'm having to use my arms more since I have to gingerly stand up now. I have not had a diagnosis on it yet. Taking one thing at a time and get the hip repaired first, then the knee. I'll keep you in my prayers.

I've got to be at the hospital at 5 a.m. Monday. The doctor thinks I might be able to go home Wednesday around noon. All indications are that it's going to be a miserable 3 to 5 days, and "recovery" in 6 to 18 months. So I won't be on TBN for a few days; just don't know for sure how many yet.

Just do what you are told and you 'should' be fine.

I will behave.

I have had both hips replaced. Not a problem with either one and they didn't slow me down except for a couple months of therapy. I was out scouting my firewood cutting sites using a cane after the first week. From the stories I hear, I hope I neveer have to get a knee replaced.

It's amazing how techniques have improved. Back in 1969 I had a "slipped epiphysis" where the head of the femur slips off a few degrees. The corrective surgery was to "bolt" the epiphysis on in-place, requiring no disassembly of the joint. It was MAJOR surgery and I was on crutches (zero weight-bearing) for months. 12" incision/scar.

I had that same hip joint replaced about 10 years ago. They had me up walking (full weight) THAT SAME DAY! 3" incision. Rehab was only a few weeks. Today it's even better. Hopefully similar advances will be made for other joints soon.

I believe that still one of the most critical factors is preventing infection. My surgeon had two custom-designed and equipped surgical suites at the hospital where every possible infection-control device and technique was used.

You are not alone. End of month I go in for surgery as well, and it will be the first time under the "knife" that is set up in advance.

Not for the shoulder, but now you've made me think. Had numerous shoulder dislocations some time ago (last one over 10 years) and the guys at WRAMC told me not to worry about it, where as the civilian doctors told me I should get cut open. Now you have me thinking:D

Good luck and I know the feeling.

The irony isn't funny.

Lef the docs office earlier this week, and shoulder replacement surgery was brought up, but I told him I didn't need it now. Get a phone call from the urologist as my doc recommended me to them because blood was found in my urine.

Someone was right, aging ain't for sissies.

I was at an ALS Walkathon last weekend and one of the members in our group has had two knee replacements AND a hip replacement! The walk is only two miles, not the 20 mile events we had as a kid , but the lady walked the whole two miles, up and down some decent hills and she went at a pretty good speed.:thumbsup::thumbsup: She was tired at the end but I did not realize she had had these three replacements until AFTER we were done walking!

We have family members that have had knee replacements and it sure was not easy on them. One person's surgeries I don't think really helped that much and likely caused more problems down the road. The other person is likely better off but not by much. :(

Later,
Dan

If the surgery was early this week it shouldn't be too long before he can use his mouse again. Mrs Bird may be using the surgery as an excuse to keep him off tractor **** sites though.

Have you ever tried to type with one finger on your left hand? Using the mouse left handed isn't quite so bad. Doctor yesterday said every thing looks good. Wish it felt that way. No severe pain; just a dull ache. This torture device they call a sling is the worst problem and I've got another month to tolerate it. I did sleep more and better last night than I have in the last 2 weeks.

AND A GOOD WIFE IS SURE A BLESSING!

A 'voice to text' program would fix the typing issue.
