I seem to run into confusion every time I go to order some fittings.

As an example, today in TSC I had a Pioneer quick connect in my hand and screwed a 1/2 npt fitting into its base. But you take that fitting and Mic the threads to compare to discount hydraulic charts...it doesn't sync.

Just now I took a male 1/2" JIC fitting off my tractor...i know it's 1/2 because I've had hose made up locally with 1/2 JIC female ends on the hoses that screw into it. I Mic the shoulder per the chart below and it's .85 inch...not .75. Straighten me out. Screenshot_20170512-204557.png

There is a few different hyd fittings you have not whickis national pipe thread which is the same as plumbing it has a tapered thread the tighter you make it the tighter it gets only recommended for around 2k psi the jic is a 37 degree flare good sealing surface they make a 45 degree which doesn't interchange with 37 degree the 45 degree usually has a notch on fitting to denote jic is a good sealing fitting then you go to an ors o ring seal also very good hope this helps some not an exhaustive list

Well I discovered my stupidity. The caliper had lost its zero. First time I know if that happening in the two years I've had it. Lesson learned, always check zero before measuring with these things.

Hoses are measured by the ID. Tubing and hard lines are measured by the OD. So a half inch JIC fitting (-8) has threads (I think) that take a 3/4-16 nut, such as firewall or bulkhead fittings. It is not the OD of the fitting, but the ID. -8 compression fitting sleeves and nuts slide over 1/2 inch tubing.
