Wife wants her small metal porch table painted the exact same color as Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer. How about I just use that primer as a final finish? Has anyone ever done that to know how well it will hold up?

Primer is porous and allows moisture to get through it. It also wears of quickly compared to paint.

Primer is a great cover and sticks well to paint. But not protect the material you've spayed it to long term.

I have been using it lately on hay feeders and gates. Seems to hold up well enough. The goats scrape and rub the paint off whether it is primer or paint.

You could try the primer route, but cover it with a flat clear coat? That might work, or atleast be worth a try

You could add a couple coats of clear finish over the primer for protection.

Any time I left metal with a primer coat I got rust. It's not supposed to be the final finish.

Prep and paint the table with the primer, put it on the porch and say "Now it's ready to paint".
See what happens......
If the paint doesn't hold up, treat the bad spots, reprime and paint.
If the porch is covered, you're probably not going to touch that table again except when you grab your beer off it

Primer is porous and allows moisture to get through it.

+1

Primer will not give the best corrosion protection.

If the O.P. wants a one coat finish, which is a compromise, buy a product that is designed for that.

as previously suggested...the most logical solution is a clear finish top coat...Rustoleum makes several clear finishes...
