Securing it isn't a big deal. And, it is probably just a bit over the rated weight capacity, but what I want to know is how they got it in there?

A guy I work with actually took that pic. He refers to it as the "Cubaru". They sure are putting a lot of faith in those harbor freight straps!

I'm used to sealed bearings and it pulls easily by hand so I haven't worried about the bearings. (It doesn't have zerks that I have noticed so I made a probably erroneous assumption that they are sealed.) But I will check them soon. I'm guessing they probably need grease.

Sorry for the ramble. It's just the perspective of a newbie who is trying to figure out what he doesn't know.

Sounds like you are paying attention, using common sense, and learning. The first two usually lead to the third, but the combination can be rare in the wilds of the road.... :)

Light-trailer bearings usually are tapered roller bearings. Relatively easy to take apart, clean, lube and re-assemble properly. Just don't start that project 2 hours before you need to be somewhere with the trailer - there are a few sizes of bearings, and if the grease seal looks tired/damaged, you may want to change the seal, and replace any worn bearings. Relatively simple process, just make sure you understand the basics of packing roller bearings by hand, and pre-loading the bearing during assembly (easier than it may sound). A brass drift is handy to have, for driving bearing cups.

So how did they get it in? The best I can come up with is two or three guys pushing it up ramps and then lifting it while someone uses ratchet straps to apply tension. I'm guessing a lot of stress on the seat backs if the straps go over the seat and then down to an anchor point on the floor. Of course they could also have used forks and an FEL but that would be cheating given the ground rules for this thread (no brains or proper equipment allowed).

I would back the car up to a bank or small hill, drive or roll the mower in, then strap it down and pull away.

I have the same model Subaru. There are anchor points on the top front of each rear wheel well, that accept latches from the folding seat backs. These anchors look as strong as the car door lock anchors on the pillars. (Photo - similar).

But that guy is still an idiot to carry like that!

Yeah, I had one of those Outbacks a couple of cars ago too. Great vehicle. Never thought to use the wheel well latches to move a mower though. How wasteful of me to use a trailer hitch and 4x8 trailer to accomplish the same job. My man card is wilting for wimping out and using a trailer.

I've seen seat-belts used to anchor tie downs.

I've seen tow truck hook up to seat belts to turn rolled over cars back over. I must say they do work great.

0520170904a.jpgsaw this one today just after it happened. Spun him around, blown back tire, lost his trailer load, old water heater, couple dozen of blocks.
