My 8 acre yard with the trees, buildings, Etc. to mow around takes me 3 1/4 hours to mow with my tractor and 84" rear mount mower.
My 72" zero turn does it in around 2 hours.

I totally believe that. I cut my mowing time in half going from a 60"RFM to a 60" Zero Turn. And my trimming time was cut by at least 70%

I would still be willing to bet that a 72" zero turn could cut your mowing time by at least a 1/4, probably a third. Those turns for an RFM really add to the time.

I agree!
I used to mow with a 72" RFM behind my 4520 (46 PTO HP). The 60" zero-turn reduced mowing time considerably.

Interesting timing for this thread. For the first time in my life I have a lawn service coming to mow my yard tomorrow.

Lawn Care Corinth | Lawn Care Service Corinth | Lawn Mowing Corinth

The doctor who did my shoulder replacement said I'm not supposed to do the mowing for 6 months, although some do earlier. I expect to get rid of this blasted sling in 16 more days, so I'm expecting to have the lawn service here every 2 weeks 5 times.

And as others have said, it's just amazing to see how many mowing services are working in my neighborhood, and this is definitely not a wealthy area.

When you start comparing today's cost of equipment it is no wonder the costs seem high.
First the efficient mower, = costly ride on, then a trailer to haul it around, the truck to pull it, walk behind mower for small areas and detailing, sweepers, rakes, blowers, maybe a vacuum system to collect leaves in fall.
That all adds up to a big investment that is probably on finance as well.
Not to forget that lawn care is very seasonal in nature and today no employees work below minimum wage and dependable ones are hard to find for this type of work.
Add in down time due to weather and the actual income time is fairly short.
Also in many urban areas bylaws severely limit the working hours as well.
Nope, certainly not for me.
Hats off to the successful entrepreneur.

At that rate, I would fertilize their lawns for free. :D

It's so easy to lose perspective in these conversations. You'll go flat broke at $1 per minute if you start up a mowing business. And it will not take more than one Summer, two tops. :)

I agree it is easy to lose perspective, I don't think he was talking about regular fertilizer!

Yep, I can't afford to hire myself if I paid to mow my lawn.

Hence you think it is too high a price to pay while others think it is acceptable. It is all in how you value it.

My lawn care folks showed up yesterday just after 3 p.m.; 3 man crew in an extended cab (not crew cab) pickup truck; no trailer. We had gotten three-quarter inch of rain just after 1:00 a.m. yesterday and we started getting a mist just as they arrived. The yard had not been mowed in 16 days, so it was pretty deep and thick (and wet) in much of the back yard; deeper than ever for my yard. Two went to work with 21" Toro commercial mulching mowers and the other one used the steel blade edger on both driveways, then changed to a Stihl string trimmer around fences, trees, and buildings. The thickest grass in the back yard choked the mowers down and killed the engines 3 0r 4 times. But these guys walked fast and I think went over a lot of the yard at least twice. You don't see any clumps of clippings anywhere. Then 2 of them got their Stihl backpack blowers and blew off the driveways, sidewalk, etc. When they left, they had done a really good job, and had been here between 30 and 45 minutes.

So for $35 and a few pennies . . . . . I don't see how they can afford to do it.

Guys and Gals,

I just happened to look up a few videos on YouTube about zero turns, well one video led to another and I found myself watching a guy cut a lawn professionally and he said he was gonna charge $50 for a tiny little yard because it had a lot of pine needles and was around 6in tall.

It got me thinking and I did some research about how much it costs to have the grass cut, it came up $30-$50 average for a cut, trim, edge and blow clippings ext.

My yard is around 1.5-2 acres that I cut, takes me around an hour and 20 mins to just mow, I would say $50-$70 per week to mow it, based off what I have read.

I estimated 24 cuttings in a season, that would be $1200-$1440 per season, then people add fertilizer, aerating, specific leaf removal, dandelion treatment, the list goes on and on.

All that can add up to big bucks per year just for lawn maintenance.

Anyone pay to have there grass cut and maintained? If so what do you pay?

All the sudden the cost of a new garden tractor doesn't seem so high lmao.

I have 3 quotes that range between $600-$700 per month for mowing my yard. No way can I afford that.
