John Deere L110
Good evening all,

We purchased a used John Deere L110 and have been running into issues with it moving since about the second time we used it.Here is as much information as I can give based on what I have learned with this tractor and what can cause such an issue:

1: The motor starts and runs like a champ.
2: The Traction Drive belt is new and has little give when the brake is off.
3: The Tow Valve Rod is pushed in when attempting to drive.
4: The Transaxle Fan is new.
5: I did remove the tire to replace the transaxle fan and made sure the tire key was installed.

I recently replaced the transaxle fan because most of the blades were missing and the belt had come out from the belt guide which is what I think caused the fan blades to break. We have no idea how long the tractor has been run while the transaxle fan blades were broken. At least four times since we have had it. This was a pretty straight forward fix that I thought might be the cause but it is still doing the same thing.

What is the tractor doing? It refuses to drive forwards or in reverse. This is shotty as it sometimes will start to move and then it will stop mid mowing and no longer go. There is almost a grinding sound once you get it moving forward. There is no burning smells when this happens.

My thought is the transmission is shot but I would appreciate some feedback from other folks who might have run into similar issues or if you have any advice on what could be wrong and how to fix it.

If you need any more information please let me know.

Thank you for you time!

I had a L130 that had worn the drive pulleys so much that you couldn't get a new belt tight. Replaced both pulleys and it was much better - but it's a flatland machine. Hills kill them.

The pulleys rotate just fine now that it is put back together the way it should have been. I think the person who last changed the belt did not have it set right. Our yard is one acre and all flat, we have a very small hill in the back but the grade should not be steep enough to kill the tractor by any means.

I'm wondering if you stripped the center of the transmission pulley or the splines on the transmission input shaft. At least I'm guessing it's splines due to lack of a keyway on the parts diagram.

It would explain the periodic grinding sound too.

Could also be something internal, but I'd check the pulley splines first.

If you have checked the belt, and the pushrod in the back, and the key way in the rim. I hate to be the "Debi Downer" out of the bunch, but I am leaning towards the transmission. That mower should be right at the 10 year mark. Hills do kill them and pulling carts.
