I have a beautiful pond of about 3/4 acres that was at one time fed by one or more fresh water springs. Some time long before I bought the place the owner at that time had the land clear cut for the pine trees. That was some 15 years ago to my best guess. The loggers, having no regard for the springs, covered the springs up, presumably with the heavy logging equipment.

Although the pond still pretty much holds its own with only rain water, I would like to locate the springs and open them back up to feed the pond. BUT - I have no idea as to how to locate the springs. And of course, I'm not versed in using dowsing rods :) Can you/anyone suggest the best way to find our lost springs?

Walk till you find soggy ground! Other than that I'd study the topography and look how water would drain into the pond

Look at the property on Google Earth.
If I look at my property I can see a creek in the neighbors 440 acres behind me. There is a color change in the trees.

What are the elevations like? is there any grade to the area?...generally when you block the natural flow of the aquifer in one place the water will emerge somewhere else...usually lower down if there is any grade...in mountainous terrain if you open a spring during an excavation at a lower level a previously running spring higher up will often cease flowing...

Wouldn't google earth or topography have nothing to do with springs?

Another question, is actually blocked, or just covered? If blocked, just adding to the general wetness of the area, maybe one would want to uncover and direct it. But I am speaking from my bowels.

We have someone from Warm Springs wanting to find some springs and someone from Berkley Springs advising him. Cool.

Reasoning on what /pine has said, your pond is bound to be below the springs that once fed it. I wonder if they re-emerged in the pond.

wondering if you have "old field tile" that drains local fields running through property and not realize it.

my experience of finding a wet spot...

mowing below dam of a lake. and suddenly rear end goes down, and end up being hung up on belly mower. and past axles in rear tires. and no way to even get close with another tractor or truck. i think i ended up buying a 100 foot or 120 foot cable shortly there after, just to pull tractor out from a distance.

the ground itself was not leaving prints with my feet, but if you hit the right spots it was like a muddy puddle within the grass.

Try this. NETRonline: Historic Aerials . Pictures are cool, go way back, and you can often see what things looked like in the past in good detail.
