The Canadians are a kinder, gentler, more tolerant version of the US, and they aren't so callous as to leave millions of their citizens without health insurance.
Several of my Canadian friends are coming south of the border for healthcare. Not disputing the friendliness of Canadians... one of the reasons we visit so often. Callous? Depends on the amount of freedom vs. socialism one prefers I suppose. Not to turn this into a political discussion.

We agree more than disagree. In the US, where you are born (i.e. poor counties [coal country for example]) has a major impact on your lifespan. I just think that the richest nation on the planet can do better.

Weather for me is a huge factor. You are heading in to winter, US summer. Look at some of the temps. I couldn't live in those places. But some people don't mind and stay in the air conditioning alot or come out after dark. Some people can't stand the cold where I live, but I am out all year.

Middle of country has short winter of sorts. But hot. Out west it depends on elevation.

I have moved, a state or two, but new where, so was easier to start searching homes on line, but still hard cause you don't know which side of town is good or bad.

To me sounds like you want to be in a rural area, for farming. Horses don't need as much land. So prices of land, and how far you can be from a big city. I like small towns, smaller the better. But I realize I like to get a variety of stuff sometimes, which you don't always see in small towns. But the internet is helping with small stuff.

Maybe try working with some group, or maybe even farming forums. If you can find an existing farm for sale, it might be the way to go. Same with horse and stables, though those can be built.

I wouldn't say we have a horse culture in Upper Michigan and Wisconsin, but people have them all over, and there are a few trails for them, but not overly common.

Myself, I would look at climate first and land you can afford. Get on some horse forums or connections in real world, maybe someone place has the perfect stable for sale. I am not sure if you can turn a corn field into a blueberry field. If so, options open alot.

Though farm land I believe becomes expensive when it leaves the family. I think they have some tax deductions, but some lose it at death. Much of it gets sold and subdivided into homes for $$$. So finding a place with enough land to farm, in your soil and climate, and cost, may drive this all.

Ya not the place to debate. But lots of Americans don't really understand what goes on. I have a bad injury, and go on a forum to at one time get help, and now to help. Getting physical therapy in Canada and UK, is awful. I was going to my doc every week, they farther out. Probably fine, I could just call if an issue. But I sensed a lack of attention, and waits. Go read on some forums, not the articles published. Not all bad either.

Yes, people in America have trouble getting to doctors cause the can't afford it. But not actually getting into see them if they have the money.

Canada is not free, a nurse told me it does depend on income some. She also said they turn people away for BS. In US you cannot. I know an EMT, we have alot of racial problems thed don't have their, and you don't get called a racist if you tell someone you shouldn't be taking the ambulance for sinus infection.

But on that tangent, I say stay awat from any major city, or he is going to have crime that he is fleeing.

I would start looking to a place with the acrage you want to buy, in your price range. Some place a thousand an acre or less on big lots, some places 10k.
Most place price goes down with quanity.
Might be farming websites to help with that.

Not true. Well the part about healthcare. We have Canadian doctors here in Kentucky who spend six months in the US because of the laws. We also have MANY Canadians come to nearby medical centers who otherwise would wait years for treatment in Canada but can get the same treatment in the US in days.

It is a problem in the US with healthcare insurance though. I am retired for six years and when I first retired my former employer paid all of my insurance and bragged that the pension fund was one of the strongest and best financed in the US (so they said in their literature). Then the ACA was passed. And we started having to pay $45 month for our insurance because the cost for the company had gone up so much it was threatening to bankrupt the fund (so they said in their literature). Now I am up to $746 a month for less coverage. Hopefully the Republicans will get their act together and completely repeal the ACA before our entire healthcare system in destroyed.

Now, no more politics.

I read somewhere that Canada is very welcoming to those that no longer like the US?

I am an American, and own a seasonal residence in Canada.
Canada will welcome you with open arms if you have $500,000 to invest (not just buying a house), and are less than 50 years old.
Canada medical care is not for me!
Wait for an MRI can be months, knee surgery wait up to two years, long waits for all procedures.
Some state of the art drugs are not available, because they are too expensive for the "free" health care system to provide.
I went through Proton Radiation treatment for prostate cancer in the USA 20 years ago.
Proton Radiation is STILL not available to Canadians......too expensive.
I am a Vietnam veteran, and use the VA system, as well as Medicare.
The VA system certainly has it's problems, but it shines when compared to "free" Canadian health care.
The Canadians are wonderfully friendly people, but if I am truly sick while in Canada, I will crawl to the border.

Health care in Oz is almost identical to yours in Canada. Long waits unless you deteriorate and your Dr contacts a specialist to move things along. An alternative is private health which can be expensive.
I am under a Private specialist and just had a proceedure and am going in again for a few days in a private hospital with no cost to me as the public system is lagging behind. Gov't pays.

Anyway, I was born in New Zealands South Island and raised on a sheep property. I took up a trade in the city and when I was 28 I moved to Australia looking for a better climate. Yes, NZ is beautiful but it doesn't lend itself well to BBQ weather. I loved the Central Otago region, particularly Alexandra and Cromwell and IF I ever went back that is where I would go. Too old to think about a move like that now.
I have lived in Oz since 1976 (Qld) and retired several years ago. I love the place even though it gets a bit hot sometimes. I have a 40 acre property and in 14 years we have been here we have never had a frost.
In Queensland there are lots of cattle and horse properties around Toowoomba and west of there.
Further south is Stanthorpe that gets a lot cooler in the winter and is a major fruit growing area.
Some real nice places to pick from that's for sure.
I wish you luck in your adventure.
