Noise Reduction - Cab vs No Cab

HST is essentially a hydraulic pump directly driving a hydraulic motor. Lots of high pressure fluid flow creating high er pitched noises.

A GST is just a hydraulically shifted manual transmission with a hydraulically actuated clutch. While there are hydraulics involved there isn't much at all compared to a HST & they aren't high pressure all the time. So no real noise there. A FST is just a modern manual car transmission, so no real noise there.

Go take em for a test drive at a dealer. Brand doesn't matter to much. All HSTs sound similar.

My only experience with a cab is on a CTL. It is a lot quieter inside the cab. It's obviously a lot more comfortable too. That said I don't think I'd like a cab tractor unless it's primary use is mowing and/or snow removal.

My BX has a soft cab and I wouldn't dream of using it without hearing protection. However, the M I use at work has the factory cab and is quite pleasant without hearing protection.

My LS cab is really quiet and never heard a "drumming" or reverberating sound like some have heard. That noise is the result of a poorly designed and or insulated cab. Cabs should be resting on rubber isolators and have some kind of foam insulation everywhere but on the glass.
As for HST whine, yes my B26 does whine a bit, but it is a tractor and I expect it to be a bit noisy. The whine doesn't bother me at all and when operating at 3/4 to full throttle, I cant hear it over the engine noise.

Note: I am hard of hearing on high pitched sounds so what I don't hear might bother someone with perfect hearing. My hearing was damaged while I was a teen driving a Minneapolis Moline G1000 which had a very load muffler. I actually think it was a loudner rather than a muffler. It could be heard for miles when under a load. It belonged to my brother in law who lived 3/4 mile away and I could hear it when he started it up. So a little whine is not a big deal for me and my tractor. If it was a car or truck, it would be different as any little squeak in those bother me.

My experience with cabs and the noise level is how loaded you have the engine and where the exhaust exits the unit. If the stack is shorter than the cab it can get quite noisy. If the exhaust is lower on the tractor and points down or to the rear a bit quieter. I run all my tractors with stereo head phones connected to a radio so for me the noise is a non issue. After 40 years running open tractors I now have three cabbed units. Now I can mow or plow with AC, heat and stereo any time of the year and stay clean and comfortable. No mosquitos or dust either! I sometimes cannot sleep at nights and mow or plow at 2-3am in the morning just wearing underwear and tennis shoes. :)

Is the factory cab only available on the Grand L with HST?

For those that say they like an OOS tractor because trees would tear up a cab I have a solution for you. Trim the trees or dig them out. I wouldn't trade my cab tractor for anything. No matter what time of year, I can be comfortable in undies and crocs if I want. When I get out after mowing 20+ acres I'm completely clean and not stinky or sweaty. The noise reduction a cab gives is great, I can talk on the phone while running a batwing. Have to have the volume up but it's still clear.
