Oil & Fuel Put Regular Gasoline in Diesel Engine and Need Help Removing Fuel

/ Put Regular Gasoline in Diesel Engine and Need Help Removing Fuel #11
Putting diesel in a "gasser" is the better problem to have, rather than running a diesel engine on gas.
The much more volatile gasoline will greatly raise diesel engine internal combustion temperatures/pressures, and destroy the engine in relatively short order. The "gasser" will just quit running if on diesel.
Many years ago, gas engine cars were sometimes started on gasoline, and switched over to kerosene while running (similar to diesel, but more highly refined).

Maybe, unless you're sitting at the gas station planning to drive several hours home on a Sunday afternoon. A full tank of diesel in a gas Beamer is an expensive nightmare waiting on a solution. Not MY BMW!:laughing:

Not the "nightmare" that gas in a diesel would be.. fried1765 is right on.

Now go get a Deere to go with your BMW.. :D

Thanks in advance for the help.

Draining Water and Sediment From Fuel Tank

1. Park machine safely.

2. Locate petcock drain (A) behind the brake pedal(s) on the right side of the tractor.

3. Open petcock drain. Drain accumulated moisture and sediment from the fuel tank into a small container.

4. Close drain when fuel flow is clear.

Thanks to all for offering quick insight. With your help, I think I'm in the clear.

I siphoned the gas out out of the tank last night. And this AM, I bled all the lines including those to and from the pump, some other line and the petcock behind the right brake. I did not open the injectors. I also replaced the filter (OEM for $11). It sputtered a little, but it started and ran with some clean diesel in her. And I've been cutting this for the last couple hours.

In retrospect, I may have been lucky. Once the tractor started sputtering, I only drove it as far as it took to get to the barn. Perhaps only a small amount of gas got in there? I have learned over the years that as soon as you suspect that something is amiss, shut her down. Often that problem isn't as bad then.

Again, thanks to everyone for the input. It really helped!! Thanks!!!

It happens.
I'm an aviation guy and back then many aircraft were labeled 'turbo' meaning TURBOCHARGED, but (min salary types) interpreted that to mean turbine and loaded planes with jet fuel.
Well long and short is that many gas powered aircraft crashed soon after takeoff.

I also am guilty as I could not determine difference between fuel and gas when -30 deg. (bad nose)
Simply drain everything (like in fuel starvation) prime and U should be good to go.
Just don't overheat your starter.

As I said, the fuel filter (and oil filter too) are "cheap as chips", especially for YANMAR donks as they are used in more than just tractors (think Marine applications).

Now a new hydraulic filter is a different story!

Don't grind the battery and starter. Open the last connection prior to the injection pump. Apply 2-3 psi of air pressure to the tank and force the gas/diesel mixture out.

I once had the misfortune of unknowingly putting gasoline in my JD 3320's fuel tank. It fairly quickly sputtered to a stop. I had my local JD dealer come pick it up and they drained the fuel, cleared the lines, and replaced the fuel filter - just as everyone is saying here.

It ran just fine until a few weeks later it started acting up. I ended up having to replace the fuel injectors. A friends said that they may have been damaged with the lubrication provided by the diesel fuel - I don't really know. The good news is that it runs great now.

The issue started because my local fuel station had a gasoline pump with a green handle instead of the usual color, and I was stupid enough not to read the pump correctly. Heck, I should have noticed that there wasn't a grease slick at the base of the pump. It was all so silly of me. Now I am much more careful when buying.

Your gas station couldn't be BP could it?...they were infamous for GREEN handles on their gas pumps and BLACK on their diesel pumps
