No pictures but I saw safety chains in action on my way to work today...

Was behind a guy pulling an empty utility trailer, maybe 6x10 or so...we were going about 40-45 in a long sweeping turn and suddenly the trailer veered off to one side then bounced back to the other, to the other, etc violently bouncing back and forth. Guy pulled over of course and when I drove by slowly I looked in and didnt see any hitch in his receiver, Im guessing he forgot to put the cotterpin in and the main pin eventually backed out and let the hitch slip out.

Seriously though thank goodness for the safety chains, we were in a long sweeping right turn in the road and when it first let go the trailer immediately veered left. If there were no safety chains it would have shot right out into the oncoming lane. Pretty interesting to see the chains doing their thing!

What is 'very strange' about it? A 1-ton dually towing a multicolored Humvee on an equipment trailer that has been stopped by a cop. If you're referring to the larger military looking truck to the left, I'm not sure that has anything to do with the vehicle pulled over. Looks like it just happened to be passing by as the picture was taken. It is in a lane of traffic, not on the shoulder.

And that's a RR track behind them all, not something connecting them together.

Rob

A couple details I forgot to mention are: The MRAP was indeed stopped in front of the other vehicles and the back door was open. There were red and blue flashing lights on the front of it also. I am pretty sure the Humvee was an armored version, which in my understanding cannot be sold to private citizens without being "decommissioned" first. This location was also about 25 miles southbound of the Camp Ripley Military base.

We don't know that the purchaser was private ownership, could be another lower branch of government (state/county/city patrol come to mind)...is that still considered civilian?

Sad to admit but I once hauled a 16' garage door from the home center strapped to the top of my '70s Honda Civic hatchback. I did tie off the front and back to the bumpers. It was quite a sight.

My garage door collapsed leaving my garage unsecure. Desperate times, desperate measures.

I've seen '70s Honda Civics with huge wings added, but that's ridiculous.

Many MRAP vehicles were donated to Police departments after they came back from Iraq and Afghanistan. The departments could have the vehicles for free but they had to pay upgrade costs to add their comm equipment and to maintain them. Since you said this one had red and blue lights I would bet that's what this is.

I sold some 16 ft long cattle panels recently. Those are the ones made of 1/4" wire and are about 52" wide and very floppy and hard to handle. Anyway, one guy put around 10 of them in the back of a full side pickup and then arched them enough to shut the tailgate. It was quite a sight but the guy said he was an engineer so as long as it wasn't one with trains, I figured he knew more than I did.

The second was a pregnant woman--8 months?--that had a midsize foreign car. She told me she wanted to strap them to the roof and then climb through the window to get in. I told her that didn't sound like a good idea but she said she hauled lots of things and this was the couple's "truck". OK, sure.

Anyway, I helped her as told, put five of those floppy cattle panels on the roof and she strapped them front and back and through the open windows. She climbed/struggled through the window, honked goodbye and off she went. :confused3:

While I find the whole thing slightly odd, for some reason it's within normal for rural living and hardscrabble people.

I have hauled them that way many times. it works great with a rachet strap running diagonally through them they aren't moving.

Heh. I had one of those. A '76. Transported a clothes dryer with it once. I didn't use any straps or even bungie cords.

Just folded down the rear seat, opened the hatch, tilted the dryer in, then slid it all the way in and closed the hatch. It fit just fine. It was amazing how much room there actually was in there.
