Sort of looks like some kind of cherry tree from my rocking chair.

Yeah, the bark in the new growth reminded me of some junk cherry trees on our property. But the bark on the mature trunk and the hops-looking flowers made me look elsewhere. Pretty sure it's ironwood/hophornbeam.

I've never heard of hophornbeam, but it sure is fitting with the flowers looking like beer hops.

Another vote for Hop Hornbeam or ironwood; same thing. That's as big as they usually get, not a pretty tree, harder than all get out.

Another vote for Hop Hornbeam. They can be flooded for weeks and survive. I have one in my yard, which I prune fairly hard each February.

Blue Beech aka Carpinus caroliniana American Hornbeam
Ironwood aka Ostrya virginiana American Hophornbeam
Close, but two different trees. Both will send the axe back at you....hard and tough.

Ironwood (Carpinus) has smooth muscular looking bark, so I believe the OP tree is hornbeam.

Beech leaves stay on during the winter
