Corn head grease can also be used on undercarriage rollers and idlers on old dozers.

Can I safely substitute SAE 80W 90 GL5 Pennzoil "Gear Plus" gear oil for the gear-driven wheel drive of my self-propelled JD mower? It's an old SP-21 - at least 40 years old.

I wouldn't put GL5 in any gearbox of that age. The additives in modern gear oils can badly affect yellow metal bushes, bearings etc. which were sometimes used in old boxes. Use a GL1 or GL2.

Two years ago my outer hubs on my L3400 was seeping oil, tire rims was alway wet with oil, jacked up front end, verify the bearing was ok, then drain out the 80/90 oil, put in new next thicker gear oil, added ATP AT-205, it's been over two years and my rims are dry, and the front end is full>> ATP AT-25 Re-Seal Stops Leaks, 8 Ounce Bottle, New, Free Shipping | eBay

Now I noticed hydraulic/trans oil leaking around my pto output or there abouts, but the PTO seal is the only seal back there so that must be whats leaking, I thought of using that ATP in the transmission but I think that's where the hyd oil pump is, because of tha might not be a good idea , probably stop the leaking but also might stop the FEL to. In this case might be better off to change the seal.

Tractor supply sells quarts of 00 grease for a little less than $6 each. I believe it's about the same viscosity as corn head grease. In the store I visited, it was displayed separately from their regular racks of greases and oils for some reason so you may have to ask for it specifically. It's sort of the consistence of cottage cheese with semi-solids and liquids mixed together. I've used it in my bush hog gear box and I use it in a veterinary dosing syringe as a mini-grease gun. Great stuff.

It's also great for post hole digger gearboxes. The seals in those take quite a beating with all of the side loads that occur.

Most manufacturers have their own version too. Told a friend about JD Corn Head Grease, he asked the CaseIH dealer and they fixed him up.

John Deere dealers usually stock it. I picked up a case at Ag Power.

Thanks. That reminds me. I'm about out of JD coolant treatment. For those reading this, JD makes a treatment to assist in preventing pitting of the cylinder liners especially on engines with removable liners (sleeved). Lots of info on the www about it. OTR truckers have a separate ION filter in the coolant line that is supposed to do the same thing. My current engines are not sleeved but I run it anyway as it's cheap and good insurance.

I use it in my brush hog gear box, but that's it. I used it in my CTL's final drive (with a leaky seal) in place of gear oil to buy some time before replacing the final. I've also heard of guys using it in old tractor, car and truck steering boxes with leaky seals. If you've seen the video on it you'll notice that it turns fluid under heat and stays fairly firm close by which controls leaks.

Nice pics and good looking mud work!

he needs to check the oil ratings. if the oil carries an MT1 rating, it will be yellow metal safe. Pennzoil's gear plus lubes , back when gl4 went to gl5, made the claim for yellow metal safe. It will depend son what that specific oil is spec'd at though.

I wonder if Corn Head Grease would be ideal for the HF angle grinders etc that come with hardened factory 'grease' or none at all.

That's what I use in mine. The stuff that came out was really thick almost like wax.
