The only gripe about woodmizer sawmills for me is the cutting capacity. I can only get a 36in diam log on my sawmill. When i get bigger logs like this one (46in) I have to split it.

Made a short video showing the process.

I am wondering why you can't slab the log before putting it on the saw bed with a chainsaw. Seems like that would be about the same amount of work, and not sacrifice the best wood, in the middle of the log.

Tell me something Mr. lumberjack, is one for forward and three for back, is two stop or four forgo, boy ask a whistle punk I don't know..................... Johnny Cash - Lumberjack - YouTube

You do much more of that, and you should put a bigger mill on next father's day gift list or atleast an Alaskan mill. I got tired just watching you swinging that maul, let alone all that chainsaw work, good job on the video!

The reason is I quarter saw all my oak that has straight grain. That is the most usable and valuable wood that oak can produce.

Love that old Cash song,
I have an Alaskan mill also with a 60in bar. I just wanted to see if I could split one like the old timers did years back,

Woodmizer now makes am LX450 mill with a 34" wide cut rather than the 23" or so probably on yours.

But in my 25 years of sawing on an LT40 here in East TN, it's so rare to run into a log much bigger than the capacity of my mill as too not be economically justifiable to buy a larger mill. Last one I did, a 42" BDH x 20' red oak log, I simply notched the log with a chain saw to allow clearance of the outboard blade guide, and slab it down to the point it's sawable.
