You guys have been so helpful and I do thank all of you!
I am actually a newbie when it comes to tractors.
My problem: I have this TO 35 1953 4 cylinder gasser. This tractor has been sitting up for 3 years. I cleaned breather fuel tank, plugs plug wire dist cap points new coil new solenoid. When I first got the tractor home I put a new fully charged 6 volts battery on and tried to crank engine checking to see if engine might be seized.

The engine slowly turned over and was not seized. After turning engine over it will not attempt to turn again. I removed the starter and did the check to see if it would spin and kick bendix in and out ( worked fine). Put the starter back on replace the solenoid . Still nothing even with spark plugs removed.

I have spark to points, solenoid, have not replaced voltage reg. Have replaced ignition switch.

Will a 4 pole 12 volt solenoid on a 6 volt system work?
Should I replace the voltage reg?

I would appreciate any and all input. I am not knowledgeable on tractors so bare with me!
Thank you in advance.

I don't think you have '53 TO-35. If it's a TO-35 it could be a 1956, the earliest year they were made.

None the less, your problem seem to be a lack of rotation of the engine by the starter. Is you battery fully charged and the terminals clean and the ground connection on the chasis bright and tight? ? Is there oil in the crankcase? If the answer is yes to the first two questions, just because the starter turned doesn't mean the starter drive is functional. Remove the starter, using jumpers put power to the starter with the battery and then momentarily jam a stick between the starter drive gear and the nosepiece to put the starter under load. If the starter does not stall, the drive is bad.
Squirt some oil in all the cylinders, about table spoon in each one and let I sit for awhile. With the key "on" and the starter button pressed is the voltage at the starter cable on the starter> than 4V and is the starter turning? If not the solenoid is not operating to connect the battery to the starter so check the wiring from the button to the solenoid.

It could be the battery cable size also. If it has light automotive type cables on it, like 4 gauge, that could be a good bit of the problem. It originally probably had like 1/0 gauge cables, and have been replaced with the lighter cables. Some Ag. dealers, and many auto parts stores can make you up a set. I have a set of 2/0 gauge on the one Farmall Super C, only because NAPA was out of the 1/0, and I needed a set of cables PDQ. With either the 1/0 or 2/0, you think there was a 12 volt battery hooked up to it, it spins it over that fast.

They are a bit pricey, but less than converting everything over to 12 volt.

Shouldn't the battery ground go to both chassis and the engine block, from what the OP describes I suspect a poor ground, he should remove and clean every ground connection including those going to the lamps if he expects to have proper working lights..

The distributor clamp should also be cleaned up to assure a proper ground is being made.

Thanks for the responses.
All connections have been cleaned

Battery is at 98 percent charge

Oil in crankcase and cylinders have been heavily sprayed with liquid wrench lubricant .

All new wiring

Heavier battery cables new

12 v 4 pole solenoid

Starter will spin when removed from tractor, have not tried the jam to see if it will stop when under a load.

Voltage reg does not click or make any sound. ( mounted under gas tank screws cleaned.)

What parts do I need to convert to a 12 volts system and do away with the 6 volt system completely?

Just to clarify: Are you saying initially the starter cranked over the engine (albeit slowly), then ....
a: Made some type of noise - a clunk perhaps - but the engine did not turn, or
b: Did nothing when you attempted to activate the starter motor?

Additionally, can the engine be turned at all by hand?

I'm just trying to understand exactly what is the specific problem you have.

We're an enthusiastic bunch, and want it running as much as you do.

Thanks to all of you for responses.

I have decided to convert this tractor ove to a 12 volt system and try that.

The 6 volt starter will not attempt to turn when it is jamed so starter rebuild is in order now.

If I understand most of the research I have done , I will have to fabricate a mounting bracket for a 12 volt generator with a voltage regulator built inside. Also a 12 volt solenoid, can rebuild starter but it will still be a 6 volt starter on a 12 volt system with a negative ground. Again I do appreciate all off you shareing input and you time, knowledge with me. Not giving up.

If it were me, I would use the 6 volt starter on 12 volts until it had to be replaced. You'll be surprised at how long it will last.

As for the generator I would install a single wire Delco Remey alternator as shown below, alternator will charge at an idle while your generator has to spin up fast to make power.

The downside of an alternator is that it will not charge a stone dead battery while the generator will, also in the old days when all we had were generators you could tow start a car and get her running even if the battery was missing.
