I own a 2017 3540 PST and just did the first oil change at 46 hours. The manual calls for 8 quarts so I put in 8. I let it run for 30 sec and then turned it off and let it sit for 5 min. I checked the fluid level and it was about 1.5 inches higher than the top mark. Manual says it should be between the two marks. Long story short I then drained about 1.5 qts out and now the level shows at the top of the line.

Has anyone else run into the same thing where the actual capacity is far different than the manual?

For sure - but opposite to what you found. My owners manual calls for 12 quarts of engine oil. It actually takes 14 quarts to bring it up to the top mark on the dip stick.

Did you change the oil filter also. That would make a difference.

Manufacturer's manuals can be off. For the most part they are accurate but sometimes a design change occurs and if a manual is already written to the older specs the manual will differ from the actual specification. For example if a manufacturer changes the specs on an oil pan to strengthen it and the overall dimensions change ever so slightly the capacity can be altered. In some instances overseas manufacturers get some specifications screwed up going from Metric to English. I found a few minor discrepancies in my New Holland Workmaster manual but for the most part it is accurate to the specs listed online.

Did you pull both drain plugs? and the filter at the same time

When you drained it initially?

Honestly I didn't. Looking back i think that was part of the issue. But i called the dealership and they said the manual is wrong and that I should be putting 7 quarts rather than 8. Either way i need to pull that plug and clean it off and somehow keep a bunch of oil from coming out. I can't imagine there would be that much oil left if i didn't pull that other plug but its my first time dealing with a tractor with two drain plugs. I did replace the filter.

Yes it will hold plenty since the 4wd shaft splits the oil pan... I have an izikie built Massey that requires the same type of drain... always let the engine run a minute or so before you drain also
