2000 John Deere 4300
:anyone:I have a 2000 JD 4300 tractor. The temperature gauge goes from reading normal to past red mark; and later back to normal. I have cleaned radiator, air filter, replace temperature sensor and thermostat; replaced all 3 hoses , and cleaned instrument panel. No steam or boil over; coolant remains at same level when I started out. There is no coolant in reservoir. Can I damage my engine if I continue to operate tractor. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Owned/operated tractor for 9 years. Still learning Thanks

The reservoir should be between the marks when cold and the radiator full to the top when cold. Are you saying you are losing coolant every time you run it?

As far as I know, there has never been any coolant in it.

As I understand, there should always be some coolant in the reservoir. Give that a try... just as txranger suggested in reply 2

Inspect the pressure cap when the engine is cold. Look for defects in the rubber seal or elsewhere.

Are you using JD 'Coolgard' Pre-Mix, some other brand or just plain water in your radiator?

Yes, you must have coolant in the reservoir - so your cooling system can expand & contract as necessary.

Yes, you can damage your engine by not knowing the state of the coolant in your radiator. Why do you think the engineers went to so much trouble to design, manufacture and install a reservoir bottle connected to the radiator with a hollow rubber tube and a sophisticated two-way pressure cap?

Why would you not bother to add coolant to the empty bottle?

Hopefully you don't have an internal issue causing coolant loss. You have a new sensor... The gauge itself could be faulty. An infra-red thermometer could be used to monitor the temp at the radiator top tank compared to the gauge indication.

4200/4300's were nice tractors in their day.
