Replacement batteries for a Prius were selling for $900 installed at independent shops in the Boston area last year. The $5000 figure is a) a myth and b) ten or fifteen years out of date.
$300 is obviously a projection but at the rate battery capacity is increasing will be true in a year or two. We're talking hybrid battery, not EV. Maybe something in the range of 1amp/hr capacity. Enough to recycle the energy from braking or coasting down a hill.
The goal is about 100 usd/kwh. Such battery would make electric car cheaper than ICE or distributed power grid closer.
