Good big oil filter wrench?

I think like everything else there is no "one size fits all".

I try to use a band type removal tool first whenever possible to minimize damage on the off chance I have to REuse the filter temporarily.

As a last resort I will use a Channellock (plier type) filter wrench

If all else fails pliers or pipe wrench.

if it is an old filter. toss a clamp on the filter, and bend the end up. and twist it off.

my issue, is stuff gets grease, or oilly, and then things begin slipping, and will not grab at all. and just spin around.

though looking at the wrench folks are posting *yums* i might need to put that on the list to get.

for laughs, you get a specific size oil socket, you can toss onto say a breaker bar. next filter you get is rated for what you need, but different size *doh*.

If it's painted on, take a utility knife and score through that paint along the seam. It will take a lot of force to break that paint by twisting the filter.

Yeah, paint WILL glue a filter in place.

Do that, and you might find your plastic handled strap wrench is just fine for that job.

Have one and works fine...had to drill/ grind another hole 'longside others ( for pivot point) for larger grip around hydraulic filter on T450 ( and replaced nut with locknut as factory nut always came loose and fell off)
5 thumbs up for the pliers type. The ones from Harbor Freight are a "doesn't suck" - 2" to 4-1/4" Oil Filter Wrench

I use a chain wrench. Mine happens to be a harbor freight model, which they don't seem to carry any more. I guess it was too good of a tool. :) but there are plenty of others. It has a socket for a 1/2 inch breaker bar or any extension you want to use. One advantage is you don't have to have a lot of "swing" room if clearances are tight. Here is a picture of one in an autoparts store, Looks just like mine, but I didn't pay no where near that for it.

Got a strap wrench from Napa. $6 for a loop of basically seatbelt on a 1/2" drive socket. Even with a 2' breaker bar it wouldn't budge.

Finally realized it had notches at the top of the filter. As it's a high pressure JUST filter it's WAY stouter than a normal filter. Hammer & chisle on one of the notches finally got it loose. Could barely get a bite it was so buried, but it was enough

I use a strap wrench for hard to get filters. A large set of oil filter pliers for easier to get to filters. For the worst offenders a socket aluminum cup type works best. It seems in my lifetime of tractors, lawn mowers, etc...each one utilized a different set of oil filter wrenches and devices for ease of use.

There is obviously a spanner wrench made just for that filter. Just where to get one is another matter.
