Farmall Suiper A
Would someone suggest a suitable tiller for a Farmall Super A tractor? I own a 1950's model with 3 point hitch.

You've got about 16 hp at the PTO, so I wouldn't suggest anything too large. Normally you would want something at least as wide as the tractor, but you may not have the hp to run something that wide. Check out the Caroni compact tillers, they are heavy built and a good value: Tractor Tools Direct | Product Categories | Tillers

The hardest part might be hooking a 3 point mounted tiller to your tractor as (if memory serves correctly) the PTO shaft on the tractor is offset to the left side of the machine inline with the engine and trans. I don't think it will work.

Just offset the tiller to get the pto alinement you need...

That will put the tiller over to cover that sides tire track too, so it works out just fine.

I was looking at a 4 foot wide. My soil is sandy (Eastern NC) and has been farmed for many years. Do you think the 4 foot filler would work. I do not think hooking it up would be an issue. I now use a bush hog with the tractor.

I think a 48" will be fine, as long as you make sure the pto shaft is long enough... I think the pto will be higher than on a modern tractor so make sure you have a long enough pto shaft...

I have both, an A and also a 140, but I've never run a tiller on either one...

Will a Super A have a slow enough ground speed?

It should be fine, as he said he has sand and the ground has been worked in the past. Most folks til at too slow of a speed anyway, destroying their soil structure!

Also, the A does have a 4 speed tranny...

A used equipment shop salesman told me my tractor was to fast, but another mechanic told me it would be OK. I am kinda confused. Why can't I till the same ground two times if it does not do the job on the first pass. That is what I do with the disc.

I agree that most people over till and destroy the soil structure, rarely do I see anyone but myself use the higher ground speeds in my locale.

That said, with only 16 hp. at the pto. and 2.3 mph in 1st gear the engine may have a hard time with a 48" tiller.
