Freezing fresh corn

I don't use any chem ferts, or any bug sprays at all, and the way we garden, there's not a huge amount of watering either...

Once the corn comes up, we put composted turkey poop between all the rows,

Then we cover all our gardens with mulch,

The mulch makes a HUGE difference in watering and weeding, as in, there's very little needed!

All of that gets tilled down in the fall, to feed NEXT years veggies...

You guys must not have as good of garden soil as I do, my Ambrosia consistently grows 8 feet plus with nice big ears!

We love Ambrosia!

As to cutting it down, that's why they invented tractors and rotary cutters!

I am with Sawyer Rob, the soil or fertilizer can sure make a difference. My Ambrosia consistantly gets 8 feet tall, with big ears. My neighbor 1/4 mile away also grows Ambrosia and it only gets 4-5 ft. tall. I side dress mine 2 times with high nitrogen fertilizer and water when necessary. My neighbor only uses horse manure and wont water [ " it'll rain sooner or later"]. We have an unspoken garden rivalry and I kick his garden butt every year, because he is too cheap to buy fertilizer or run his well. Gardens love attention.

WOW! I have had Ambrosia hit 6' but not very often.

It's windy here. And, I have trouble with my ground getting saturated with water, and the corn blowing over. So, I'm happy to not have it get real tall.

Not sure my soil is the factor on height of ambrosia. I planted silver queen beside it on same day. The sq got to about 8 ft but amb stayed short. I will try to find picture. I imagine it was just a different strand of ambrosia. I am not complaining . Both were great and have some more sq coming along now. I ran out of other

There does seem to be different suppliers for Ambrosia seed.

Height doesn't seem to be a big factor in the quality, or size of the corn, unless it's less than 4'.

I do know my soil wouldn't win any awards. But, it's somewhat weed free. No thanks to my neighbor, who grows an acre of weeds right next to it.

I often fantasize about buying Roundup ready Ambrosia seed, while pulling weeds.

Raising the garden a bit to give the water someplace to go and mulch is the answer... I wouldn't buy roundup ready sweet corn if it was available!!

There are millions and millions of weed seeds in my garden and all around it, BUT I mulch the veggies in so those weeds can't germinate! NO germination = NO weeds and that means little to NO weeding...

There actually are like 7 varieties of Roundup ready sweet corn. But, as far as I can see, it's only available in big $400 sacks, or $50 for a little over a pound.

I tried mulching in the past. That resulted in my trading weed problems for, insect, and fungus problems. The weeds are easier to deal with.

I'm not sure how you was mulching, I don't have any of those problems...

Of course, you have to have your gardens so water isn't sitting under the mulch, mine have good drainage.

Ahhh a sweetcorn thread.

Everyone has their favorites, I an certainly havent tried them all. There are literally dozens of different types and kinds to choose from. And reading descriptions, I have to say they all sound good.

Dad has always liked kandy corn. Never much cared for silver king. But I have kinda settled in on jackpot.

Now I am not up on all the lingo and "types", like SE, SU, SH2 or whatever. But be cautious, some of the hybrids have to be planted alone. If they are allowed to cross pollinate with other types of sweetcorn, you end up with basic field corn.

As for harvest time. We dont waste space freezing cobs either. Use a turkey fryer to blanch. With a big pot we were doing 25-30 ears at a time, then into a cooler of water. Bout 5 people, got the huskers/silkers, one cutting kernels off, one bagging in quart and pint bags, etc. I think we did ~200 ears last year in an afternoon.

The tool we use to remove the kernels isnt something I see much of, and a brief google search didnt show anything like it. Ill keep looking see if I can find a pic

I saw a tip on the food network for cutting corn off the cob. Take a bundt pan, and stick the pointed end in the hole, then cut the corn off and the corn falls into the pan.

In the early '60s I used to be a window clerk in the Dallas Post Office and there was a fellow in Dallas who ran an ad in some magazines and he was a regular customer at the post office, shipping the gadgets he made for cutting corn off the cob. And it appears that Walmart now sells almost the same thing.
