I have been thinking of making a new dolly for my BX23 backhoe.

I have a wooden one made of 2X4s and plywood. The problem is that it is too high. It makes it difficult to remove the backhoe without hitting/bending the back fender.

I was thinking if I made a metal one out of 1x square metal tubing I could get the top lower. By making the castors sort of outriggers, I was hoping to get the top no more than 2 inches off the floor. This may make it easier to remove since it is like placing it on the ground not on a platform 5 inches in the air.

What do you all think?

Thanks,

BXpanded has one almost exactly like you described. Even if you don't get theirs, you can see what theirs looks like. BXpanded Backhoe Dolly

My concern about the BXpanded is that the are not designed for a BX23. They are great for the later models but not expressly made for a BX23.

I wonder if they were made lower, could you quickly do the backhoe on a BX23 like the video. To clear the rear fender on the BX23, there are additional steps. Not many, but certainly more complicated and a greater risk for error.

I will try to look at the geometry on the BX23 this weekend.

I too love my BXpanded BH dolly. Is the BX23 lower to the ground when installed?

I think that the difference is that the attachment of the backhoe to the tractor is different between the bx23 and bx24+. I have a bx 23 and recently purchased the bxpanded backhoe dolly. I was able to take off the backhoe with very little problem. I haven't put it back on yet, but I don't see much issue. I think that you do have to be a little more careful not to bend the rear fender, although I've already bent it even before I had the dolly. I love the ability to be able to move the backhoe out of the way when it's not in use.

That BXpanded dolly looks like a shopping cart cut down...lol

Dear Srossman, thanks for the info. I is good to hear it works well on the BX 23. I was hoping for it to be as easy as the video if the dolly was lower. That it could rotate off the hooks if it pivoted at a lower point.

Does the backhoe rest in the dolly at an angle tilted back? This would make it unable to pivot at a lower point as that back would not have enough ground clearance. The dolly I made is just a platform of 2X glued together so it sits level.

I like the way you did not need to use the stabilizers on the newer models. Room is always an issue in my garage.

I think the height of the dolly may be important of easy on/off. My only issue with long time storage is the stabilizers slowly loose their pressure and the legs sag. If you store the BH on a dolly in an area that you can't get the tractor close to re-pressurize you could find yourself it a bit of a trap. I wire up my stabilizers to prevent this. Someday I will fab up some hooks and a bar to hold the legs together.

I have a ratchet strap reserved for just the stabilizers. It gets grease on it from the bottom pin on the pads. No big deal since I use the same strap all the time.
