My 1951 8N has a "Sherman" transmission.
Is a "Howard" transmission similar to a "Sherman"?

I'm rarely buying old 9n/2n/8n for resale anymore cause that aren't bringing much these days but you did good in your purchase cause if the howard trans is in good condition it's worth a grand. That's what I sell the howards for and have no trouble finding buyers. shipping a bit of a pain because they have to be packed so well but that's at buyer expense.
Good luck with your new tractor.

Kirk

Yeah I didn't buy this for resale. Hoping to make it a working tractor. There has been a "Restored" 8n on CL for months advertised for $3900.

I wouldn't have messed with it except for it having a loader. Plan is to make the bucket a screening bucket to scoop up debris and sift the dirt out. I may convert it to a skid steer mount. It'll just be a third tractor to do specific chores with. I will most likely spiff up the paint as I work on it though.

Here are some photos of the attached counter weight. Anybody know what this was?

Can't get the size thingy to popup so guess you have to contend with thumbnails. You can right click on them and select open in new tab or just view then go back. (well fudge! can't even get the thumbs to show so I guess it's links. wish they would fix this forum to work)

Your sherman trans is in front of the main trans which means it also effects the pto speed. So when you reduce your ground speed you also reduce you pto speed. The howard sits behind the main trans so it has no effect on the pto speed, making it ideal for rototilling. The value of the howard is almost double the sherman combo.

Resale or not always good to have extras to make the tractor more useable.
Manure buckets make good debris and log movers. Readily available for cheap prices. You can also add a tumbhook if needed.

I will try again. It worked in the main forum where folks said it was a worm drive housing from an Otis elevator. I got it off this morning and set it back in the woods for now. It was being held up with a good ol 2 ton come-a-long.

When I rolled this thing off the trailer and again when I was pushing it in the garage I hear a clackity sound in the trans. I'm assuming that is not normal?

Here is my respones to the same question on YT this morning. It's easier to check out the trans in an 8n then on a 9n/2n just pop the trans/gear shifter cover. Flip the cover over and look to see if the spring is broke and your shifter end hangs down too far and make contact. this may produce your clakity sound when in neutral and rolling. Also drain fluid and inspect gears. Would also like to add get yourself some manuals they will be helpful.
Good luck with your new tractor project..
I would also add to this since you have a howard trans and it appears to be it the engaged low position I would move the lever to the neutral detent and roll the tractor to see if it still makes noise, this might help isolate the problem
