HST vs Manual trans

Actually, I suggest it's more due to the number of operators with varying experience (and attitude). Gears are efficient, but an inexperienced or incompetent operator can destroy a clutch pretty quickly.
Same can be said of a hydro operator!

You either learn to be a decent operator or you don't!

How do I wear out the clutch on my hydro tractor that has no clutch?

It could be that the people who complain about the whine should be downshifting the range gear on their hydro tractor. Loud whine indicates higher pressure fluid squeezing through the transmission which in turn adds more wear. I prefer hydro transmissions and automatics in my other vehicles but I am sure if I were a superior and highly experienced operator I could learn to push down a clutch pedal. Well maybe.

So what gear do I need to have installed on my JD because it whines no matter what gear its in?

HI or Low are my choices and its actually worse in Low. Whines with a load, whines without, whines on uphill, downhill and flat. Simply put if your moving in anything besides N it is making that aggravating sound and there is nothing anyone seems to be able to do about it. So I do understand how some people get tired of hearing the whine.

Grab some favorite cheese with your whine and accept life with HST. Seriously, some HST must be a lot more noisy than others. I don't have anything to compare. My BX has what I call, a little whine but it doesn't really bug me unless I can't get up a hill (usually an issue in reverse).

Yes some of them do whine a lot worse than others. My Kioti will whine just a little when the wife backs it out of the garage but she refuses to turn the RPM up until she is outside. Anytime you have the RPM up its very quiet. My oldest HST in one of my Internationals makes no whine at all even if I load it up at idle but other tractors I have owned have been hit and miss with how loud and when they whine or don't.

Rare bird? When I started buying cars/trucks having a 3 on the tree was rather common. Having a 70's suburban with one might be a little odd but I assure you it wasn't as rare as you might think! I had 3 of them at one time and along with it the wife had a Chevy chevelle with one .

I wont argue with you any longer but I assure you if I decide to buy an new or used car or truck in the future I will post here and ask you which I like best as you seem to know what is best for me no matter how limited your experience is compared to mine!

Yeah, three on the tree wasn't rare, just very odd in a Suburban (even though they weren't quite the family truckster they are today.)

But your DK40 doesn't whine much does it?. At least my DK35se hardly whines at all. Near non existent. Only a bit in HI range, which I hardly ever use.

I think the smaller the tractor the larger the whine. I think it has to do with forcing hi pressure oil thru smaller passages.

Pretty much my thoughts the smaller and simple hydro in my x749 whines more than the 110 and 4520 with ehydro transmissions.

My Kubota L3240 didn't whine and my grandpas L3800 whines badly in any range.
