IMG_8615.JPGIMG_8595.JPGFullSizeRender.jpgIMG_8619.JPGHello. I was given a flail mower a couple days ago and I don't what brand it is. The guy who gave it to me acquired it with the house he bought in 2008 and hasn't been used since at least 2008. it has been re painted, so no stickers or labels. Nothing. Here's what I know. Original color was like a Case Yellow. 60" wide. Fixed position, no offset. The gearbox input shaft is 1' 15 spline. It has Maurey pulleys, a BC98 powered by the gearbox and a BC72 which turns the cutting head. Has a 54" 5/8" belt. it's missing some of the cutters. They are hanging on a D ring that's connected to a couple brackets that are sandwich between and bolted to the cutting head. The whole thing is froze up and I don't want to break it before I know parts are available. Does that make sense? Anyway I took some pictures, maybe one of you will recognize the maker. Thanks, Matt

I believe this a Mott flail mower. Haven't found a model number yet. It didn't come with a pto shaft, so still looking for a one that fits or made to fit. No shear pin on the mower so I'll have to take that into consideration. Knives are available from Flailmasters.com so no worries there. The belt that i had to cut off was 54", so I replaced with a 54" but it's very tight fit. Will go a little bigger if this one breaks. Everything turns freely now. New grease fittings and fresh grease. Just waiting to find a shaft, then new knives and off to mowing I go. Matt

OH, lordy, lordy, lordy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello Mtodd101,

My dear friend I want to welcome you as the newest resident member of the Flail Mower Nations from Whidbey Island in the State of Washington.

You have struck oil and gold at the same time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your flail mower is a Mott Interstater with the tow hitch to tow the Mott 16horse power motorized flail mowers in a gang mower set up.

YOU HAVE STRUCK GOLD chain it down, set up pit traps, and chain the mower to the guard dog and the garage.

Repair parts are available so that is not an issue, Side slicer knives are available so that is not an issue either.

When you have a moment and I have recovered from my shock seeing this beautiful mower please take pictures of the underside of the flail mower and the left and right side of the flail mower rotor to allow me to inspect the mower and help you as you go along.

We can and will help you so no worries there, it will be a good fall and winter project for you to get ready for the next mowing season.

My friend you now have a forever mower that will take care of all your needs for brush and fine sod mowing.

Leon

============================================================================Hello Matt,

It looks like an model 88 flail mower. find a PTO shaft is easy. preferably a Eurocardan PTO shaft, No need to worry about a shear pin the V belts are your shear pin if you run into a hidden object in the brush.

The belt is supposed to be tight Matt, The spring under the V belt guard is there to tension the V belt. you need to make sure it can travel freely by greasing the fitting on the tensioner arm. send me your e-mail by PM and I will send you a PDF copy of a Mott manual.

NO worries.

Thanks for the replies Leonz. Opened up the gearbox today. Lots of moisture. Not a lot of lube. Cleaned it up the best I could. Put a magnet in to collect any metal that might be present and added some 90w about 2/3. making a new gasket and will hand turn for now as I have no pto shaft, lol. I'll start looking for the proper yoke. hopefully I can use one of the shafts I already have. Good to know about the belt being the "shear" point. I wasn't sure what I'd. Buy a really expensive Drive shaft I guess. Thanks again, Matt.

Here's a picture of the knives.I think they are finish knives? Can these be changed to a different style? I see this style and a longer two blade that is attached with a cotter pin. Thanks, Matt.Image 1.jpgImage 6.jpg

To answer your question about Bigfoot, I haven't seen one. That's not to say I don't hear weird howling at night coming from the woods, lol. Matt
